I am getting rather good at this and I have never clipped to far and got blood. On the other hand I think I am cutting too little. I clip Bob then his claws are nearly too sharp within 4 days. Is this normal or is this too fast?

If all you are trimming is the very tips, then yes...they will start to regrow very quickly. The higher up the cut...the longer you can go between trims. I trim about an 1/8-1/4 inch up when I trim. Usually closer to 1/4.

Important Note
Veronica's advice is NOT for young igs. If you have a young iguana, you'll just want to remove the very tip of the claw. As you become more comfortable and your iguana grows, you can begin to clip a bit more.

Also a young igs claws grow faster than the older ig. At first you will have to trim more often. When Zok was little I used the little reptile/bird claw trimmers. Now I use my dremel tool with a sanding attachment.

Thanks for that note Steph! 1/4" is great for bigger igs but that much off a baby would be UHOHHHHHHHHH!!!

I got more aggressive in my trimming yesterday. I took off about 3/16 of the tip but still got no bleeding. I think I only made them sharper though because they now have nice crisp corners. Oh well they will wear down soon. When my dad trimmed our dog's nails I was usually the one who ended up bleeding shortly there after guess igs get the same thing.
thanks for the help Mark

If you want to get fancy you can even round the nail.

The pics that various sites had for trimming were what messed me up. The all showed just the very tip being trimmed and that just regrows in two days. Bob's nails are much better now that I was more aggressive in trimming.
thanks Mark

I trim Zilla, Reptar and Magellans nails. They are my younger guys, and they grow fast and sharp! Grotto on the other hand is full grown, we only cliped his nails once and they arent that sharp. Of course they will leave marks but they dont draw blood like my litttle guys do if their nails arent clipped.

I use people nail clippers and emery board to take care of Vega$' and the dragons' nails. Heh, they get manis and pedis more than I do!!! Even Vega$ gets a lil massage afterwards (in my mind, to make up for the mani she doesnt like having!)
