Hi, I have an ant problem! On the ant killer bottle it says to put fish tanks in another room, which we have done as we have an aquarium. I was just wondering if anyone knew how it might affect repitiles? Obviously I wont be letting Don out to lick the capret while the stuffs down and for a while after until its been hoovered lots! Has anyone esle had a similar problem?
Also they seem to like Dons tank as theres free food there! But I really dont wanna have to put it in there!
Cheers.

We always have to be careful with Iggi outside using ant bait on the fire ant mounds. I would not use any airborne insecticide that could be breathed in by your iguana.

Dominick's link has some good suggestions. My favoite ant repellant is cinnamon. Sprinkley a *row* around the tank, or door where they're coming in, whatever. They don't seem to like to cross the line of cinnamon.
Please be very careful about using commercial repellants.
Also, check out MK's info at <http://www.anapsid.org/pestcontrol.html#ants>

I know that when we had to use flea bombs, they also said to take any fishtanks out of the area. Do they suck the oxygen out or something?

No flea bombs fill the room with a very toxic chemical that is very toxic to fish as well as any animal or human. It will go directly into the water and the air circulating in the tank.
The house we currently live in is on a crossbeam and has lots of places for insects to crawl in. Our yard and house were infested with fleas and ants. (we had feral cats) We used serious pesticides(Demon, the kind you mix w/water and spray, supposedly safe when it drys) outside to stave off the fleas, we had to do the whole yard and even did our neighbors. After getting our tortoises we've stopped spraying the entire yard and have stuck to the perimeter of the house with diaznon. But now the fireants are coming every day there are more and more mounds! I think the torts will have to go back into the kiddie pools for their daily outside time while we get rid of the ants that are sprouting up. Anyway if you can stop where the ants are coming in you shouldn't have to use anything inside.

Hello, I am experianced with the ant problem. we have had ants on several occasions. Right now we have these very small, what they call ferral ants. They are almost like piss ants and are very hard to get rid of.
We live in a town house and the bug man comes every week but we will not alow him to spray because of the iggy's. These types of ants do not like windex and if you spray it on them it will kill them instantly.
Also the bug man is checking into a ferral ant treatment which will affect the whole house. He is checking on weither it is safe for the iggy's by checking with the department of agriculture and he is supose to get back to us this week.
If it is dangerus for the iggy's I guess we will keep fighting them the bast that we know how. Right now they are not too bad and I have not seen any problems with the ants getting intothe iggy's cages or even on the iggy's

Thanks everyone, lots of good suggestions there! Im not having much luck on the insect front, last night I found a cockroach clinging to my foot in the shower!!! Then another one flew in! Only found two, they had come in through the window. I didnt even know we had them in the UK, but if theres two that means trouble! I dont think we have an infestation in our house but some one near by might Gave me quite a fright, Id never seen one before and there it was trying to climb out of the water onto my foot.... eugh... lol!

This is what we have... and swear by it... www.rodent-control-products.com/pestoffence.htmIt doesn't use ANY chemicals, and it's not ultrasonic. It irritates the nervous systems of bugs and rodents so they stay away. The first 3 weeks is major migration, though. It's NOT recommended for homes with rodent type pets or spider pets, but is fine for lizards. We had a bad ant problem, but they're GONE now! <I hate sounding like a salesman, but we really do love this product>

The brown flying cockroaches are harmless if they're the same kind we have in the states. They are wood roaches and mostly feed off of rotting vegetation. I usually catch them and put them back outside.
As for ants...I use the cinnamon, also. I have to be careful though because the ferrets also have the run of the house twice daily, but they sniff once...sneeze a few times and go on about their play.
