I grow fresh alfalfa for Bob but usually it gets aphids on it. I don't use any chemicals on it to control them.If he eats the aphids on the alfalfa is that a major problem do they contain any outright toxins?
I know they are animal protein but they represent such a small fraction of a percent of his diet I don't worry about that. He only gets a small hand full of alfalfa per week, just because that is all I can grow right now.

The aphids themselves do not have any toxins. Other than the animal protien concern they are harmless. You probaby don't want to hear it but if you have ever eaten broccoli florets you've probably eaten a few yourself. The simplest way to deal with aphids is to hit them with a spray of water from the hose. It will knock them off.

Hey, I am all about eating insects. Kind of irritated that I am too far west now to have cicadas.
With Bob's diet and the ratio of a few dozen aphids to the amount of greens he is getting I am not worried about the animal protien. He also gets ants with dandilion caps and clover flower when roaming.
thanks Merlin

Come on Tesa, they're good.
Some are crunchy, some aren’t, most are tasty when sautéed.

I'm a chef and I had to go through a 8 week sanitation class. I'm amazed what's allowed. I wanted to become a sanitation inspector. I don't know if I could stomach it now. :nods: Don't touch your salt and pepper shakes when you go out to eat. they're the direst item in the place viewable to the public.
