I looked through the diet thread and I saw kale on only 2 lists. I haven't fed Bowser any kale, but I do have a question about it. My mother was telling me this guy she works with has a green iguana and he feeds him 100% kale, all the time. I know the lack of variety is bad, but is kale specifically bad for iguanas? I gave my mom a list of good foods to show the guy and he actually got offended! He said his iguana is 7 years old and he's been fed kale all his life and he's apparently as healthy as a horse. He gave my mom a picture of the iguana (I haven't seen it yet) and she said it's about 5 feet long and completely brown. Any info you guy have on this would be great, I'm kind of concerned for this iguana.

I think a diet of Only kale is definatly a bad thing, Kale should only be fed on occasion, with other staple greens (collard, mustard, turnip, etc). My vet actually tells me to leave kale out of the diet completely. Obviously I didn't listen to that, but I only give it to george every other month and only about a hand full in his whole "salad"

I haven't fed kale in more than year. It's VERY high in oxalates which binds calcium and goitrogens which bind iodine. If this is the only thing this other ig gets then whatever calcium/iodine it gets in it's diet is barely getting absorbed.

I always love people who come off with this "I have done this for______(period of time) and my animal is perfectly healthy. How does he know? Has he had the vet look at it? Done bloodwork etc. Probably has never even had the lizard to a vet! The example I love to give is,... back in the bad old days of Ig keeping, I fed my ig, as was suggested at the time,...lettuce, dog food, insects, monkey biscuits, etc. My iguana lived to reach 10 years old. When it should have reached 25-30! And ask him exactly how much Kale does he think grows in the iguanas native land.

I talked to my mother today and apparently this guy said, "My iguana has lived to be 7 years old so it MUST be healthy." I couldn't even laugh at that...poor iggy.

Is there anyway for you to offer some printed material for a better diet and the reasons it needs to be more diverse?

I live about an hour away so it's hard for me to get info down there, but I had my mother give him the address to this site, but he doesn't want to come here because he thinks he's right.

Well...there's another ig who will live a shortened life. *sigh* You can only do so much.
Maybe he's one of those people who thinks they know and will boast about how they know what's right, and then start doing some research anyway...just without anyone knowing because he hates to be proved wrong.
I can hope...
