I have a Raytek one ($100 when I got it!) I love the fact that I can point and click and get a good read! I prefer this to the standard digital therms. Prices have really come down over the years, since I got mine 'bout 5 years ago or so. Friend of mine pointed this out: www.tempgun.com/main.html$25 plus shipping; and its compact She picked up one at the 2002 Daytona show for more than double the price. Heh, we should have bought in bulk, there were enough of us! Des.

Hi Desiree-
I just recently "found" this wonderful tool being talked about on another forum. I thought it was a great idea and a very effective measuring tool.
As I understand it, you can just point it right at the reptile and take a temperature reading. How cool is that!
I'm going to do some further research on it. Thanks for the link!

I've been wanting one of these gadgets for awhile! They had them at certain Radio Shacks for only $40 about the middle of last year. I always seem to be low on dough though...
$25 I should be able to afford though!

I looked at that site, and that gizmo is completely different than I thought yall were talking about. I have a friend that runs a plastics production company. I usually hang out there on my days off. They have an actual gun looking thermometer that uses infrared light to measure temperature. I can stand 8 feet away from where I'm pointing and still gather the 500 degree temp reading from a bulkhead. Of course this thing starts at about 350 bucks.

Hey Des? Do these things measure internal temps or just the surface?

Hey Des? Do these things measure internal temps or just the surface? it's the temp of the surface you're aiming at it. and i read the temp in near proximity of what i'm trying to measure (rather than stand 5 feet away, i'm more like on top of it) i have a radio shack one that sits and records ambient temperature. but i can aim at a corner in the room right by the radio shack one, and the temps will be nearly close (off by a degree or two) this is waht i have (well an older model of ) www.raytek-northamerica.com/cat.html?cat_id=2.3.5 we also use these at work to monitor the temps in our computer labs.

Oh but wouldn't it be great to have a device that measured the core temp of anything it was aimed at!

I got mine a couple of days ago. I have been so busy I have only used it on Zair's cage ever so briefly. It's is SO compact.
When I first recieved it I was at work. It was supposed to go to my home addy, but the UPS guy delivers company stuff to where I work...and happens to be the guy who runs his cattle in the fields next to us. (We have craters in our yard from his escapees).
So he gave me my toy there. I was able to play with it there in the molds, my skin, the ambient air...it was good, but for testing at home has been nearly non-existant. As it is I am here at 12:15 am...waiting to feed puppies in 1/2 an hour so I can go to bed until 6 am to do that again.
I can see this is going to be a huge asset. Icecube goes to her new home on Sun. Zair will get her MV bulb. This will come in very handy, as well as using the UVB meter, to set up the "hot spot" for Zair.
(Saw your posts Dom on the UVB meter list I help moderate. I have some comments to make of my own in a new thread on the "hot spots".)
Possibly tomorrow I will be able to use it, though I have bulbs to plant, another puppy to adopt out, other puppies to bottle feed, mange dips for older pups left, wedding reception...*drifting into way to much to do mode*
