The parazap wasn't working as planned so I took him to the vet. How much would surgery to remove two unknown objects cost? The vet I went to priced things as such:
Examination: 39$ Panacur worm meds: 19$ Fecal test: 30$ X-ray: 45$ (did a second one for free)
The fecal showed that he has pin worms, and the xray showed that he had two somewhat egg shaped objects near or in his colon. I was out of cash so I was unable to get a blood test done (100$). He told me that surgery along with blood work will cost somewhere in the area of 400-600$. Does that sound about right?

Shaun, Im sorry I can't help you much here. I've never had to pay for a surgery. Along with that, prices vary in different geographical areas. The other prices sound about like what I have paid.... and when my vet suggested I spay Thrasher (which I didnt do) he said it would be around 150.00.
What a tough position to be in!! I'm so sorry!!

Hey Shaun, I am an expert on surgey. My name is Debbie and if you haven't read, Miss Zak in the hospital. Well that is me and Miss Zak had surgery this past Thursday.
When we went and picked her up, the price was $320.50. So what your vet has qoted you is about right.
I know that comming up with the money is not easy. We paid $200.00 and post dated a check for the remainder of the balance for the 26th of this month. That is when I get paid.
All in all with all three of our Iggys we have spent prob about $1500 in vet bills.
I don't know if you have ever heard of pet insurance but Jon and I are looking into getting some for our guys. With the high maintnace and care that these little green fellows need, it will fincially put you in a hurt if you are not careful.
We try toi keep some money set back for these occasions, Miss zak caught us off guard and it wasn;t expected so we had to scramble to pay the vet.
But let me tell you, if you really love your green friends and I know that you do, money is only an object and it can be replaced easier that your beloved Iggy. I hope that this has helped you and given you the answer that you were looking for. I don't mean to ramble. Good luck and let us know.
Debbie Iggy Bam-Bam and Miss Zak.

I'm going to have it done as soon as possible, either tomorrow if they are open or monday. My dad is willing to chip in 100$ and I'm going to go without the blood work. That should reduce it to around 200-400, which I will pay because... damnit I didn't spend 130$ on a new cage just to have him die before he gets to use it. ;D

Well I got up this morning at 5:50am to call the vet, turns out they arn't open till 8:00am.. ooops. Well I took him in, in the hopes of having the operation done today but the vet refused to do it without having blood drawn. So I'll need to call him tomorrow to find out the results and whether or not surgery is an option. On a funny side note, I never manhandle Orko, if he starts thrashing I always let him go. The vet however needed to hold to tightly to confirm gender ect.. and Orko HATED that. Well the second time around when I opened the box, the second Orko saw the vet he gaped his mouth and started tail whipping at his hands. I was completely amazed at how easily he could tell people apart.. yep he really doesn't like that vet

I don't blame Orko one bit! There was a time that I was having blood drawn about 4 times a week. And most days it meant more than one needle stick . I felt like doing some serious tail whipping too!

Well the blood work came back, the vet wasn't too specific but he said there were some long term signs of stress to orkos system, which makes sense since he has been blocked atleast for 16 days now. He said it was either the stuff blocking him or an infection so he wanted to keep orko for a couple days and give him antibiotics. He will do an xray on thursday and if the blockage is still there he will operate... I wonder how long they keep them after the operation?

Debbie should be able to answer the surgery question. With any luck, the antibiotics will do the job. One question tho......what is the "stuff" blocking him and are antibiotics gonna make it go away?? If it's a foregin object it has to come out regardless of what happens with meds. Ask questions Shaun....cause some vets get that "know it all" attitude when they don't. If he isn't specific...ask him to be. Tell him you want to understand better. You have to be in charge. Good luck and keep us updated!!

Well he said he wasn't really sure. The objects are egg shaped and about an inch long, but since Orko is a male they can't be eggs.

Well I talked to the vet this morning and he said Orko was moving around more and that he took another X-ray. The X-ray showed that the objects had moved abit and changed shape, they may be breaking down and it's possible that surgery will not be required.

Yeah I read it there I had a bit of a revelation, what's a little less than an inch long and shaped like an egg, and is in my living room? Pistashio nut shells! It's the only thing that matches the description so I'm bettin thats what they are.
