Ok, me and the guys were sitting in the break room today talking about the price quotes I got from a couple of vets for blood panels, and an interesting question was asked. Where do you draw blood from on an iguana?

Ok folks, I need a little help on this one. It used to be that the vet would clip one of the claws enough to make it bleed, but the blood is easily contaminated that way. Now they do a regular blood draw. My vet draws it from the base of the tail (underneath) anyone else??

Yep there is a vein at the base of the tail, you flip em over and aim for the middle of it. EDIT: The vet missed the vein in his first attempt and had to stick Orko again. But it's not really his fault, you can't see the vein like you can on a human.

But keep in mind, my guys get daily baths and live on paper towels or in the case of Vega$, she freeroams our bedroom. I was once scratched by Vega$ (oy, did it hurt my eyeball!) and the er doctor commented how clean the cut was (no residue) when he was looking under the scope.

I know I've heard of people giving their iguanas injections in the thigh.

Injections can be given in 3 ways: Intraperitoneal (injected directly into the body cavity) Subcutaneous (under the skin) Intramuscular (into the muscle) but....that's not the same thing as drawing blood.
