Zilla is a spastic little craphead. Yesterday morning when I retrieved him for his morning poop-bath, he went ballistic. When I checked on him 5 minutes later, I noticed some blood in the water. He somehow cut his front finger (Thank God it wasn't broke) and was bleeding from it. I also noticed a spot on his belly just in front of his cloaca. It wasn't bleeding, and I'm not sure what it is because it's almost perfectly round. I'm wondering if it could be a rug burn from him moving too fast. I'm also wondering if putting the carpet on his upper shelf was a good idea. Any suggestions? I'm keeping a close eye on the two injuries to make sure they don't get worse, but in the meantime, is applying a human antibacterial ointment OK for reptiles? I believe it's feesible, but I just want to make sure.

triple antibiotic ointment is fine for the cut. What kind of "spot" is on his belly??? What's the shape and color? Any possibility of a fungus?

It could be possible. That's why I'm also asking about the carpet. I spray his habitat several times a day for humidity, therefore I'm not sure if moisture within the carpet is drying thouroughly or not. It feels dry before I respray, but I'm afraid it may be a perfect spot for things to grow. Any suggestions on the carpet? If the spot near his cloaca doesn't start to clear up in the next couple of days, then it's definitely time for a vet check-up

Hi Joe-
Hmmm. Carpet is abrasive I've been told.
Fungus from the carpet is a good possibility.
Can you post a clear pic for us? It would sure help us to better guess at what it is.
Until you figure it out, standard first-aid protocol applies.
See the First Aid Kit on IZ for those methods.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks Dom. I don't have the resources to post pictures as of now. It doesn't look like a fungal infection, but I'm still not sure. It's not growing, and it looks as if he may have rubbed his outer skin off. It's transluscent in color on top and red underneath. I'm almost certain if it was fungal there would be other spots along his body. Do you use carpet in your enclosure?

Hi Joe-
I have used Repti-carpet in the past, but now Rex simply has a towel on his basking shelf. Floor is linoleum.
How's he doing? Is it looking better? It's important to see an improvement in the wound to ensure the healing process is taking place.
Also, up the UVB light exposure and Calcium intake to jump start the healing.
Keep us posted!

Hi Dom. Thanks for the concern. I've been applying burn cream to the area everyday now, and it is clearing up.
