A lot of the research has already been done... ;D. I have a list compiled of the best ones on the market. The brand is important. Not all bulbs are created equal. You need no less than two 4' fluorescent UVB tubes for an iguana over 1 year old. Since the strongest amount of UVB comes from the center of the tube and weakens quite a bit at the ends...the longer the tube is you get, the better the coverage. The brands to go with: Fluorescent tubes:Reptisun 5.0 and 10.0 Iguana Light 5.0 ExoTerra 8.0 Arcadia 8.0 (UK) These lights can be purchased online cheapest at www.reptiledirect.com . Merc Vapor:Mega Ray EB (external ballast) 60W Mega Ray SB (self ballast) 100W T Rex Active UV Heat 100w Spot( self ballast) The EB is mostly very high UVB emissions with as much heat as a 60Wbulb produces. Very easy to control the temps with. This one comes with an external ballast which should last at least a couple of years or more. This is the best bulb on the market anywhere…period. It is more costly initially, but the bulb should be the only thing needing to be replaced on a regular basis and is comparable to other merc. vapors. The SB produces more heat, which I don’t like because to adjust the temps the UVB source needs to be moved farther away. Still a good bulb…out-shines (pardon the pun) and ordinary UVB bulb. The only one better is the EB. Stores many of these can be purchased through: www.reptileuv.comlllreptile.comstore.everythingreptileinc.com/index.htmlbaskinglizards.com/FYI – EXCELLENT source of info for many of the best bulbs: www.uvguide.co.uk/index.htmgroups.yahoo.com/group/UVB_Meter_Owners

Hit Loki with LOTS of fluids. Water can't be stressed enough. Get about 3cc every 3x daily for the rest of the week if you can. If not...just do the best you can. The poops will look even better than it does now. The white part should be pretty fluid, too. The pic isn't to clear, but it looks like it's actually holding a shape of some kind. It shouldn't do that. Good hydration will help flush the kidneys of any toxins that might be causing the yellow discoloration...:-)

It looks like a possible fungus...and something the vet needs to prescribe something for. As for the orange skin. Iguanas are going into breeding season right now...and even though he's sick...he may still be going into his breeding colors. AS for his urates...the fluids will help immensely...but there may also be permanent damage already. Did you make an Aug. appt.? This is also an emergency iguana and why I was hoping you could get him in, too. Now with this tail...he needs to be seen more than ever.
You really jumped in with both feet on this one...;-)

yes the appointment is Aug 2nd. I wish I could get him in sooner, its just not possible. I thought maybe it was a fungus, I just hope his tail doesnt have to come off whatever it is, is also under his scales and raised compared to the uninfected areas

Maybe with a topical treatment and oral antibiotics this can get cleared up without amputation. That's an awful lot of tail to try and remove...:-(
I sure wish you and the green thing luck!

too much tail. his urates look excellent today, I have found the best way to get fluids in is with his food. I grind his food to almast the consistancy of baby food and add a little water.

Although my iguana will never have the misfortune of your little guy, I do have a MBD pet. My beardie. He had shakes, irregular defecation, swollen legs, and minute fractures along his wrists and hands. The vet gave me calcium gluconate to take orally, something that must be given according to weight. It took about a week before I saw any changes, and limping and swelling still occurs randomly as the disease was moderately progressed. This animal will need special care for a long time, but don't despair, I see igs worse off than him get better at the reptile shelter I volunteer at..Of course your concern right now is calcium, and calcium absorbtion wiyh UVB lighting should be first on the list. Rest, and a sunny window, or a good uvb bulb and a GREAT diet will take care of much of this with time. What you need to watch for is kidney and liver damage. If you can get a vet to do some bloodwork on him, this will inform you if there is a problem. Keep his cage immaculate, The Silvadene Prism talked about is great, when you get it, and I've found nothing is better for burns. Do not let him step or lay in his feces, and try to not stress him too much. He needs warmth, good food, and sunlight if possible. Good luck, and I love the name you gave him!!

Something should be done for the Iguanas sake. Its just insane how people can buy the little green guys and then toss them away when they get sick and dont want to spend $$$$$$$$ to get them well or dont want to put out the $$$$$ to house them properly. Or just plain out get bored. I am so angry right now!!! About people abusing and neglecting Igs and the stores that sell them like candy and toys. They are living breathing creatures!!!!!!!!!! Not toys. Humans take them out of the wild then sell them without a care in the world of what is going to happen to them in the wrong hands and what about the ones in the stores that are neglected and overcrowded in one tiny cage. I am so thanfull that there are people out there that run rescues, shelters and rehabs. Without them there would be no second chances. I think it should be made illegal to own any high matainence reptile without a permit. After having Loki these past 2 weeks watching him start to do good and then fail again just really got me thinking. Having an Ig is like having a baby that never grows up and you must treat it as such. Im going to miss Loki. thank you everyone for all your help so that I could try to save him.
