will a vivarium of 8-9 foot tall and 3-4 foot wide and 2 foot from back to front be big enough for a green iguana?even at full size (remembering that the average size is 4-6 foot including tale)
thanks in advance.

You are on the right track, and it sounds like you would be willing to give more space. I would go wider and deeper( front to back) the more space you can give, well the happier the Iguana. You came to the right place, for info.

The whole idea is to be able to offer room for 100% living if needed. The viv size you described may be better with little different dimensions. 8-9 feet high is too high. This gives the iguana plenty of height where he/she can easily get out of your reach. You want him below the level of your head. A 6' tall viv will suit the purpose better and allow you to reach it easier and keep it from getting any ideas of dominance over you being so high. You also want the ig to be able to stretch out full length while it's on a shelf. a 3-4' wide viv will not allow that. 6' wide will be fine - 8' will be better. You want it easy for an adult ig to turn around in. 2' does not allow much room for turning. My guy had a hard time and often hung part way off the shelf just to turn in his 2' deep enclosure. Allow 3'-4' front to back.
Total dimensions for an adult - 6' tall x 6'-8' wide x 3'-4' deep.
As a baby it would get lost and be very hard to earn trust in a size this big. It's best to start with a 50 - 55 gallon tank to start with. This allows you a year to get the plans down and built for it's first birthday...:-)
If you're starting with a juvenile ig...than that size will be fine. You can always build a temporary wall if it ends up being too big for even the juvie.

And even if you intend to let the ig roam free. keep in mind that this may not be a viable option! You still need to have a cage that will hold house the ig on a permanent basis if need be.r There is the occassional iguana that just will not settle down and be social. You do NOT want such an animal roaming freely in your home. And in the event of you getting a male breeeding season can be ,..interesting.

A lot of good points on he size and roaming tips...Breeding season is a real handful with any size of iguana (trust me, you don't want those teeth wrapping around you, a loved one, another animal or even a visitor) Plus, iguana's need to have a home to retreat to if they just don't feel like being social (which is very common). Always remember they need enough space to move around as well as climb, they don't just go up and down. So, a space of 6ft wide x 3ft deep and 6ft high would be the minimum for a full grown iguana.

That size will not be large enough for an adult iguana. It will do for the first 3-4 yrs, then it needs something larger...even with exercise. It's just not enough room to stretch out. If you can even get another 2 feet and make it 5' x 5' x 3'...this would be better. Remember you will be needing a shelf in there. This will take a good portion of the depth away when climbing. A 12" shelf is what I had in the 2' deep enclosure...and it was very hard for my 4' iguana to turn around in.
Is it a piece of furniture in the way. Can you rearrange?

oh...i cant rearange it will be going ontop of my drawers,so no i cant sorry, well in 4 years time i might have my own place so i will make a massive viv for it then..why will i need a shelf?i will have concrete parrot purches (2 of) in there to keep its claws from over growing and i will have a huge branch in it aswell. will this suffice?if i get a bigger one in 3-4 years time?

How big are the parrot branches? Even the biggest used for macaws I've seen will only accommodate a smaller ig. Branches will be fine...:-)
Honestly...if you cannot provide the way you need to for any animal...you may want to wait until you can. It's not fair to the animal. Please keep this in mind when fulfilling your own desires...the animal must come first...;-)

there is no way around it you are going to have to trim and possibly file the claws. Prism is just trying to help and give you good info and advice. If you dont accomodate that Ig and keep it happy its going to get stressed out which can cause it to get ill and die. I myself use branches ( my kids find them and bring them home) all my Igs love them. they are free disposable, and look nice.

The shelf is for them to lay on while basking. The concrete perches are designed for birds to keep their claws trimmed. Unlike birds, Iguanas drag their bellies across things. Ever have a concrete burn from falling on pavement?
The branches should be at least as big around as the iguana!
