Hello everyone,
Just found the site this evening, lots of great pics and info. I don't have an iguana yet, but am doing my pre-purchase research. I am actually having a hard time finding a place to buy/adopt an iguana in my area. I don't really want to order a farmed one, but if it comes down to it I will. Anyways, thanks for the great site!
PS. If anyone knows of a good place to adopt/buy an ig in Alberta, Canada it would be great.

Hi jb! It's great that you are doing your research first! It's people like you who turn out to be the best iguana parents. I'm sure everyone here will pass the word that there's a home waiting for an ig in Alberta.......maybe something will turn up. In the meantime, keep reading, posting, learn everything you can, and start working on your igs house. Welcome to IZ!

GOOD FOR YOU for doing the research FIRST!! You will not only be a better ig-parent, but you'll have an easier time adjusting to teenage igs!
Good luck finding an adoptee!

Hi again,
I didn't know where to put this but I figured this would be ok. I just wanted to let everyone know that I got my iguana this past weekend at the Calgary reptile show. I named him/her Tom because I have a bearded dragon named Jerry and I thought the names fit well together.
The breeder told me that Tom is a couple months old, and wow does he have a lot of blue on his face. I am kind of worried though because he hasn't ate anything since I brought him home saturday. I read that they usually don't eat for their first few days?? Any suggestions to get him eating? I am feeding the same salad my beardie gets:
>organic spring mix minus the spinach >spaghetti squash >Red pepper >carrot >alfalfa sprouts >Bean sprouts >Green and yellow beans
I will post a pic once he gets a little older. For now I am just going to leave him in his cage for a couple weeks so he gets used to his new house (A 65 gallon reptarium with new 5.0 UVB light). I bought a temp gun from pro exotics and I swear it is the best thing since sliced bread!!
I also have built myself one of keith's Lizard cages, the big jungle gym for when Tom gets older. I just have a few finishing touches to put on it and its done. Any suggestions on when I should move Tom into his bigger enclosure?
Thats all for now, I'm just rambling one from excitment!!

Hi and welcome to the zone! There is a really great food chart on this site to choose Toms diet from. I printed it out and keep a copy stuck on the side of my igs enclosure and well as keep one in my purse for when I'm shopping. Collard greens seem to be the most essential for an ig. I vary Puppy's diet around the collard greens. Twice a day he gets collards with a different variety of other greens, veggies and fruit and I use a vitamin spray as well as misting his salad heavily with water to help keep him hydrated. I've just had him a month and I swear it seems like he's put on a whole pound! I'm still learning and doing some trial and error with enclosures so I don't have much to add there. Happy parenting!!! ;D

Congratulations on joining us in ig servitude! LOL! However your diet needs a serious revamp. Please check out the diet section here for what you should and should not be feeding. Your staples should be greens collard mustard and turnip. The spring mix is mostly lettuce and has virtually nothing to offer in the way of nutrition. The spinach and carrots is a once in a great while if at all food.

Hi,
I always look for collard greens but I can't seem to find anything like that. Nor can I find mustard greens. Anybody got any tips on where or what to look for?

Ahaaa...
Loking for Collard Greeens in Canadian Grocery Stores
how I know the pain you are going through....
I am a expert on the subject...lol
Your best be is to go sweet talk the guy/girl in the produce department ...they can orden them ,however they will probably want you to order like 20 bucks worth ...way more than you need all at once...
If you can find dandilions ...they are also really good and will do great as a staple green ...
I get them from a "Independent " which also carry's the Dandilion Greens..
hope this helps

Having lived in the north I know that this idea may not work for you but; since I moved south I have found that the grocers in black neighborhoods have a much better stock of greens than those in white neighborhoods.
Eric, where abouts are you from? Sounds like the Detroit area having mentioning Farmer Jack's. I kind of am from that area -- that is the area where I keep my official address but have not spent much time there in a while. Great place to watch is a Meijer. The three that I used to depend on (Roseville 13 and Little Mack, Flint, and Traverse City) had dandelion nearly all year and the rest of the produce section is better than most anywhere I have ever shopped (Kroger, Nino Salvagio's, Farmer Jack, Walmart, IGAs, Sparten stores, and others in Indiana and St Louis).

Thanks for your suggestions everyone, I live in a big enough city that I should be able to find some place that sells good greens, so I will keep looking. On a positive note, I cam back from class today to see that Tom's salad was missing quite a bit, so he seems to have regained his apetite. Hopefully now I can just satisfy it with the proper food!
James and Yoda, it's nice to see another Canadian on the forum. I was born in Mississauga and most of my family lives in Barrie, and I have been to Sudbury before because that's where my great grandparents live.
Anyways, see you around!
