It sounds very much like dry gangrene. This is where the tissue begins to die. Sometimes the affected area will dry up and fall off on it's own, but sometimes it takes surgery to remove the area so it does not progress. There is no cure...it has to be removed.
As for anesthetic...the same kind as for dogs and cats, but it's trickier. Iguanas can hold their breath for up to 20 minutes making it difficult to know when they are fully anesthetized. Given too much and their slow metabolism has difficulty coming out of it and occasionally reptiles do die because of it. Death is not a huge factor, though. Only slightly more than domestic animals.
Can you get a picture of the affected area?

Cile...you're asking for veterinary advice and we simply cannot give that to you. I understand you do not have a vet qualified for reptiles, but a good vet will consult a specialist and go from there. All we can do is offer suggestions, but that is getting out of my comfort zone with what you are asking. Please...see a vet anyway. Even if they aren't experienced in iguana care.

That looks like the whole foot is affected . Yes you will definately need to get info from another vet on this one. I wish you the best of luck.

EXCELLENT NEWS!! Make sure you keep his living area very, very clean! Were you given any medicine to keep further infection away?
