HELP! 18 year old iguana is getting very aggressive. He is on the attack like never before. He's not letting me near him. I am the only one who handles him.

You might want to take him to a vet. A lot of times unseen illnesses are the cause of aggression. Other than that, could you give some more info please?
Edit: read your post in the "Bites" section (I usually don't visit that since I'm not very good at handling the sight of blood and injuries).
I stick by my suggestion that you take him to a vet, though. Is he passing feces regularly?
The towel thing is a great way to distract him, and I agree with the heavy leather gloves and usual routines. Pay attention to your clothes, hairstyle and so on. Might be something aggravating him.
