Hi all, a newbie here. My 3 yr old male iguana seems to have swollen (or enlarged) Sub-Tympanic Scales. Has anyone seen this before or know what might be going on??? Thanks in advance.

You might try posting a picture. As males grow they get quite a set of jowls on them and this may be responsible for what you are seeing.

He's a top side picture. Notice how his jowls have become much larger. What do you think??? Normal or??? Attachments:

They look like normal jowls to me, no need to worry.

I agree. Looks like he is developing the typical male wedge head!

Well guys, you were both wrong! We went to the vet and his condition is beyond repair. It was an abscess that began eating away at his jaw bones. I have to put Wizard down soon.
I take responsibility but next time - Merlin & Jen - be sure to encourage the owner to seek professional help. The vet took one look at it and went for an x-ray without hesitation.
I was a newbie and it cost Wizard his life and I lost a friend. I will not be visiting this web site again - for obvious reasons.

No need to be hateful. The people on this forum work long and hard to provide the best advice possible given the constraints of limited information and no actual interaction with the animal. They have years of experience. The one picture you posted certainly does look normal. These people cannot be held responsible for not properly diagnosing a problem by looking at one picture. It's not like they can actually examine the iguana. Kudos to all the mods here who devote so much time and energy to helping these magnificent creatures.

I am extremely sorry that it did in fact turn out to be a medical condition however, we are not veterinarians and never claimed to be. We can only tell so much from a picture. Had you come back and said, well the jowls are getting larger quickly we most certainly would have recommended a vet visit or you could have taken it upon yourself and just went and made the appointment. We all do our best to help anyone we can with their Iguanas. Again I am sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry that it turned out that way. But we were only looking at a single photo. We could not see the ig from any other angles. We arenot Vets and gave you the best advice that we could based on what we are told/shown.
Look up pictures of male iguanas and you will see that they look exactly like what you showed in the picture.
