I can not get him all that tame.I have been working with him for about 3 weeks and i can only pet him sometimes, the littlest thing can freak him out. I hold him at least a hour once a day.Oh and is there anything special i should feed him sence his tail has feel off? Any tips would be much apprecated. Attachments:

Hi John! Welcome to IZ! Any idea how long ago his tail was lost? Looks like maybe a month or two ago. He also looks a little dark on his upper half. What are his cage temps? The reason I ask is that his upper surfaces will become dark when he's too cold...and although I have no idea what the psychological affects are of this...underheated iguanas seem to be more paranoid. You're doing great though with your patience...you have given it a few weeks. Its cool...you've tried...some of us only give a day or two before freakin out. Just let us know what the cage temps are...better yet...HIS temps. You can usually get a decent infrared thermometer you just point at his open mouth for about 30 bucks. As you might guess...under heating or over heating could make your ig a little loopy. Other than that though...it could just as easily be the fact that he's a baby iguana...and their instincts are very sharp about larger animals who want to eat them. I know you don't intend to look that way to him, but it might just be the way he sees you. In that case...what its gonna take is repetition, and building trust over time. Just to tell you a little about me...I have a 17 year-old iguana named Hercules that I raised from a tiny guy like yours. He was a challenge in the first year...just getting him to trust me. Heh...and in his "terrible twos" [adolescence for an iguana] he was a TERROR...but he's a fantastic animal now...has been for a while. In short...its gonna take a while to convince that little guy that you're not a monster who is trying to eat him. Lets get his temps established first...then we can work on other stuff.

He normally sits under the light when it is on but the cooler side of the tank never gets below 70. I will have to get one of those thermometer the next time i get paid. I spary his tank many times a day and i try to keep his humidity up.What is his temp suposed to be?He lost his tail about 3 weeks ago. Its staying pritty clean. It ,ust be alsome to have a ig that old. Havin one for 17 years, i bet he trust u over all that time haha. My freind feed him crickets and i read that it was horrible for them. I feel like i know alot about these amazing animals but i still feel like im doing somethin wrong. How long do u think it will take him to get bigger? Is there certian foods that will make him grow big and helthy? Thanks for ur help

Our female who we raised from a baby (she is now about 4 years old) is still very skittish and if looks could kill we would be dead when we enter her territory. Our male who was between 6 months and a year old when we got him calmed down after a few months coincidentally having to be treated for 3 abscesses on his dewlap seemed to be how he gained our trust. He felt like crap and we made that feeling go away therefore we must not want to eat him. He is in the range of being probably almost 5 years old. Just keep at it.
