Hi I got up the other day to find that my iguana (chilli) has dropped his tail for apparent reason, I woke up and went to feed him but when I looked in the viv his tail has dropped of over the half way Mark! I've been reading up online an it does say that they do regenerate there tails? He's only 3 months old ATM, but he/she is still eating well an climbing around ok, will this have any affect on his behaviour? He's still really skatty, but once youve got hold of him he settles down, is there anything I can do to incorage the regeneration? Thanks for any help/reply's. Thanks Ellis and chilli!

I'm sorry to hear that, Ellis Their tails do regenerate but it will be a darker brown color and it will be harder then the rest of the tail. They usually drop their tails as a defense mechanism so I'm concerned as to why he seemingly dropped his tail for no reason. Could it have gotten caught in something and Chilli freaked out and dropped his tail for that reason? Stress could also be a factor as to why he dropped his tail. Are there any animals in the house that are noisy or run past his enclosure or stare at him or anything like that? My last thought is that there might be a health reason. I don't know why Chilli dropped his tail but a vet check up might be a good idea to make sure there are no hidden health factors that played a part in this. As for the tail as it is right now - try to keep it clean (but don't hold his tail - try to make cleaning it quick and as low stressful as possible). I would recommend bringing him to the vet to have his tail checked over and the vet might also recommend antibiotics seeing as he has an open wound. -Jenna
