You know, it really bites that we are forced to protect our systems from folks that just have way too much times on their hands! But, this is the way that the tech world has evolved in the area of internet security.
So.....
Make sure you have a firewall (software or router) and antivirus program. Keep your antivirus (and/or hardware) software updated with the latest program and virus definitions files. Do regular anti-virus scans of your full system. Maintain your updates for your Windows OS; go to microsoft.com and check for updates regularly. Esp, of importance are critical updates (security patches, service packs) Dont' blindly open email from unknown folks. Dont blindly open attachments without scanning. Try not to visit websites of questionable nature from links you receive.
I use Norton AV, so visit symantec.com and read up about the latest viruses and about the whole concept of internet intrusion and activity. Be informed!
