I just have a question about taking Ig's in vehicles. How old or big should they be when you first start taking them on short trips? And how should they be caged or restrained from accidently getting underfoot while driving? I want to get Lenore used to this but I don't know when to start. I have a van which I took all the back seats out of so it is very roomy back there. And I could put up a net to keep her from getting up front and in trouble. I took her outside for the first time today and she had a little hissy fit at first but then she calmed down and was looking around at everything. I held her all the time she was out, which was about 10 minutes. I just don't want to scare her to death by taking her out for a ride if she's not old enough. As most of you know she still isn't tame yet so should I maybe wait until she is bigger and tamer?

I have had 3 igs that LOVED to travel. Zair definitely does. I keep him in a large dog carrier turned so he can look out the window. Even in the van you might want to keep Lenore in a carrier. If you opened the door and she shot out... ...unless you removed the net and got her before opeing the door... There is the stress factor, especially when talking about such a young ig, but all new things are stressful...and as with anything...repetition will show her that this can be a good thing and she will get used to it.

I take Gil with me to work, and I let him roam in the car. It's only about 2 miles, so it's short. He usually rides on my left arm, which I lay by the window and he watches the scenery go by. He loves the fields.

We are actually traveling with our iggys today, its moving day! YAY! Zilla, Reptar, Magellan and Hercules definitly have to go in carriers, they get a little freaked out sometimes. But Grotto is perfectly happy with climbing on top of that little ledge over the trunk in my car and chillin under the window. He is really good in the car. You get some crazy reactions from that too. Jess

Personally I would wait till the Ig is tame. Makes it a lot easier. Once the ig is comfortable with your then try the traveling for short periods. My Zok rides on the dash or on my arm by the window as well. the only concern she shows is when we go under an overpass and the shadow goes across. I suppose she thinks its one BIG hawk!

lol Merlin! I just made a reference to Thrasher's "DUCK" impulse at overpasses the other day. It cracks me up when she does it....(mean ole mom that I am) ;D Vega$ does the same thing! Yucca (the dragon) will show his beard and gape! funny guy. Just a safety note, taken from a, uh, very embarrassing and um bad experience. When driving alone, be careful with a free-roaming car iguana. Um, read the inset in MK's book (er, that's my car that I crashed). It's very easy to be distracted by your iguana, and do react with instinct to things like a potty dance, sounds, movements, etc. I was distracted by V's potty dance, and looked down; the car drifted; bonked to the right side of the road, then bonked to the left then back to the right (from wheel turnings and stuff). Fortunately, it was only me on that part of the road. Um, yay for insurance? Oh, there's V's pic too in MK's book, that Adam took (we were travelling one year with another friend to No. Cal for a get-together). She's the ig looking thru the car window. These days Vega$ travels in a dog carrier. Des

its' not my most shining life moment, but it is something to keep in mind when we do travel with our pets. my track record isn't that bad tho -- 1 at-fault accident in 20 years of driving besides, these days, at least i can say cel phones contribute to more than accidents than a roaming iguana would ;D i'm still a bit embarrassed 'bout it (happened 'bout 6-7 years ago), but i hope that someone will benefit from that anecdote since it could have been fatal. hence why i've been posting what i've learned over the years to the various aspects of the boards. it's dom's fault LMAO @ Des! I can't believe that was YOU! When we meet you've GOTTA sign my book! lol ;D

Hi des-
I'll accept that blame willingly! ;D
We're glad to hear the anecdotes of such an experienced and well-educated Iguana owner.
Your insights help many many others keep their Iguanas safe from harm.

and Vega$ sign with a hand blot on the picture. Now if it is going to be a legitimate Ig signature it has to be done in poopy painting! ;D
