Kerry I wouldn't even put a dog in the trunk. There is no way of regulating temps like in the passenger part of the car and the chances of overheating (or getting too cold with a reptile) are too great. The trunk was never designed to accomodate something living. Being right above the exhaust and the fuel tank it would be very easy for anything in the trunk to be overcome by fumes.
I also allow Zok to ride loose in the vehicle either sitting on the dash or on one of the seats. However she is well used to riding and doesn't freak out about it. I do make sure all the windows are up where she can't jump out.
Steph- the mental image of Gil hanging his head out the window like a dog with tongue flapping in the breeze is hilarious! Does he drool too?

Well, we went out again yesterday. He did MUCH better. Even relaxed enough to eat some greens I brought with. He still turned rusty in spots, but the gaping didn't start till we were coming home.
AND...after 6 months, it finally happened. I got pottied on! The bad part was that it happened when we were getting his leash on. I couldn't stop and change! Just towelled it off, and kept going! We got home about an hour later, and boy, that shower never felt better! ;D

today i took Jolee on his 1st offical outting. We went to fill up the gas tank and the petshop.... while in the car i put him on my dash (with his leash) and he enjoyed it after he settled down a bit. he did the gaping mouth bit once or twice... so i had my girlfriend hold him in his towel (he loves it)...

Oh I see, its a temperature thing, right, gotchya! Hes still in his carrying cage when we go anywhere, but I was just thinking in the future when hes too big for it he will have to go somewhere! These carrier cages dont cater for two foot tails! When we first took Don out, he stayed clinging to the back of my neck for the first few times, which was somewhat painful!! But he soon got used to it. He wasnt too keen on the grass either, but more because he felt exposed than anything, kept heading under the shed! So we brought his hammock out for him to sit on and he will sit there for hours, until he gets brave enough to go for a wander and see the neighbours!

Hey I know I'm a little on the late side, but what the heck I'm new.... Lewis used to gape his mouth EVERY DAY when I would pick him up. He was in terrible shape when I got him. He used to gape his mouth at me whenever i would come close. I vote it's a stress factor, as he doesn't do this anymore (except when he sees whoopie the cat too close to him)
