Yep..I measured thru window glass first thing when I got my meter.
I got a reading of 2 microwatts per square centimeter.......(basically NONE)
My Reptisun 5.0 tube gave me a reading of 34 from about 4 inches away....
The Megaray bulb gives readings up into the 400 range.

www.reptiledirect.comwww.lllreptile.comBoth have very good prices on the UVB tubes. Since it is Christmas...get your family to give you gifts for Zeke instead of things for you directly. The tubes are what herpers used for many years. The Reptisun 5.0's are the best tubes on the market as far as flourescent tubes go. You will need two of them at 48" long. The ones IK suggested are the newest and best to date, but very expensive...but very well worth it!! I also had gotten a reading of 2 uW/cm2 through the window (first thing I tried, too...lol). It needs to be at least 50 for those that don't know.

Cool...thanks for the readings Tesa and Veronica...I knew that they made special "low E" windows to attenuate other UV freqs to protect colors in furniture fabric, but I had NO IDEA how much even regular windows attenuated UVB (Well...I had SOME idea...just never saw any readings in this spectrum from people I know I can trust.) ;D Some day I'll actually get down to the task of making an inexpensive UV spectrum analyzer so we can further try to understand not only the health, but the psychological effects it has on our creatures. I'll make it PC-compatble, I figure its the easiest (and cheapest) way to make the full results easily readable ;D
Yup, Melissa, you're going to at least have to go to a good pet store for an adequate UVB source. You've got INCREDIBLE positive energy though...I'm sure you'll find a way. I salute you for having so much love for Zeke. ;D

Just finished reading the thread.. Melissa, congrats on snatching Zeke away from the edge of oblivion. (Can one use large sheets of plywood for the enclosure's sides, coat the interior so its more or less water-proof, and install a screen/mesh front 'door' and lil mesh-clad 'vents' on top of other walls for airation?)

Yes. However using a peice of plexi for the front door will make it a lot easier to control heat and humidity.

Well all is still good i guess!
Dad is still stressing over the smell.. And i'm starting to too.. It's starting to get to me..
I tell dad we need a new proper cage for him, and he gets stressed even more over it.. Maybe thats all i'll ask for for christmas.. I'm planning on putting out some resumes soon, maybe tomorrow or thursday..

Do you have a UVB light yet? You need this more than a cage right now. The Canadian sun is to cool to go outside...and he will get sick again witout it. He is still recovering...and for severe cases it takes many months. Zeke is far from better.

Hi Melissa, still going at it with your Dad, the smell and the enclosure? I'm sorry about that and the stress it's causing you all.
When I think back to your first posts and how very sick Zeke was...as oneCrazyCleric posted, you have pulled him back from oblivion. In truth I didn't think you would be able to by yourself.
Somehow you'll find a way about the cage problem.Good luck in all your ventures!

Well, last night, my sister took me out, and I dropped off eight resumes to find a job.. Hopefully I'll be getting a call soon!! No, I still don't have a UVB light Once I get a job, taking care of Zeke will come much easier, I think; so my fingers are crossed! -Melissa&Zeke*
