I just recieved the following note and pics from a fellow. Im not experienced with males, but this doesn't look right to me! Opinions please!
Hi Tesa, can you please help me. My iguana had some dried fecal matter around his cloaca. I then wiped it to remove it an something started to come out. I don't know if it is a worm, his penis, or his intestine. I then stopped and put him back to his cage. He shows know pain, and has not had a bowel movement for a while. It is pretruding about a 1/4 " and is pinky orange in colour.PLEASE help me. If you want I may be able to send you a digital image. Thanks Allan

It sounds like it's probably the hemipenes hun. How long ago was this and has it gone back in or is it still protruding? Have you posted a question on Iguana Zone yet? A picture would definately be helpful. Regards, Tesa

Hi Tesa, Thanks for the quick response. I have included some images. It is still protruding. about half an inch. I have not posted any thing I don't really know how to do that. This happened about an hour and a half ago. He is going pee with clear fluid and white stuff though. I have not noticed any movements in the last few days. I am I going to lose him? How much time does he have? How could this happen? I am I going to have to put him down. Please help. Allan

Yup...looks like his hemipenes to me. Wiping in that area sometimes...errr..."stimulates" the male iguana.

Doh!!! I missed that part, the pics are a little out of focus too. If its still protruding, and a little dark on the end, its most-likely a seminal plug that just hasn't dislodged itself.

I would recommend that he tries feeling it first (I know...YUCK! ), to see if it kind of has a rubbery, rawhide consistency. If it does, probably a good soak in the tub to soften things up a bit and then gently pull it out. I've had to do this with Herc a few times, its a little icky, but it always went well. Edit: Oh...also VERY important when doing this...DON'T take your eyes off the place where his teeth are, just in case he decides to have a go at you, Allan .

Classic plug from those pics, and a small one at that. It will come out with the next bowel movement or just from walking around the cage.
Bath would not hurt but dont think it will help much.
The thing that caught my eye was What is meant by this?

This is just a plug, pretty common actually. Go here: www.greenigsociety.org/breedingseason.htmto see prolapse pics and a better discription of what is entailed in that. No solids in the last few days is not fulling normal though. What are you feeding the ig?

Until you get another photo up, Allan, here is a page which shows what the plugs look like pretty clearly. Maybe you can use the pictures there for a comparison. www.anapsid.org/seminalplugs.htmlIt also includes some info which relates this to his pooping problem.
