Hi gdg It would seem like a good idea, but in fact it's not. Due to the risk of salmonella, (and the iguanas cleanliness in general) the enclosure needs to be kept sanitary. Since the soil cannot be cleaned, it will become a breeding ground for bacteria and pose health risks. Many people do, however, place potted plants within the enclosure. You would need to do a little research first to be certain the plants you choose are not toxic for the ig. Here is a link to Melissa Kaplan's site to learn more about igs and plants. www.anapsid.org/resources/plants.html

I too would advise against it. The soil would soom be a breeding ground for all sorts of nasties. Impossible to clean and your ig cage would quickly take on the ambiance of a sewage treatment plant in August! Additionally igs are rough on live plants and will cause you to constantly be re doing and replacing the plants. There is also the danger of impaction from them licking the stuff.

I had three small ficus plants in Gil's enclosure when he was young... and it was TRULY a hassle. I won't do live ones again.
