When we initially started talking about building Narcy's new cage, i wanted to do a slide out tray with a permanent wire grid over it that the urates and poop would drop through, so that Narcy didn't drag his tail through. Hubby thought he wouldn't be able to walk on the grid without hurting himself or getting hung up on it so we just did the tray. WELL, of course the tray is wonderful, but as i feared Narcy has a tendancy to get poop all over his tail as he 'leaves the scene'. does anyone else have a grid bottom on their cage? Maybe like a 1/2" square rigid wire? your opinions and thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I have thought about that.
Keith Van Zile (lizardcages.com) did that in an early cage with the 1/2 inch grid and did not really like the results.
I would use a much more ridged mesh like some of the white closet wire shelf or an oven rack. Try to jump up to about 1/8 inch diameter wire tack welded together. Places to look that I can bring to mind include houseing stores (linens and things & organized living), a fencing supply house, or metal supplier.
Another thing that may work is the vinyl lattice, like that used under decks. I have seen this for sale ijn a 4x8 sheet at Home Depot. Larger holes but a large ig can navigate them without too much difficulty or danger.

yes, i was thinking along the lines of a heavier welded wire mesh as you mentioned, a more rigid grid that would support Narcy's weight. I had not thought about the vinyl lattice though, and i actually have some pieces of that left over from my back deck! i might give that a shot and will let everyone know how it works.

Read up on seeling the vinyl before jumping. Composit decking and fencing needs to be initially seeled to prevent bad staining.

I would think that the width of the cross sections on the vinyl lattice would pretty much defeat the purpose. Some of the ummm "stuff" might fall through but I doubt it. The closet shelf material sounds like the better idea.

This is one of the things to try and review. The hard to clean stuff (liquids) will run right off while any lumps left on top can be pushed off with a sheet of cardboard.
I expect that this will suffer typical gen-1 problems.
