I just completed my foods sanitation recert. and during the class the use of ammonia came up. It is written in the health codes here that ammonia CANNOT be used as a sanitizer or disinfectant, it is a cleaner only. Quat. ammonium compound (Roccal-D) is acceptable.
On the MK website, she lists ammonia as an acceptable disinfectant for herps (tho used infrequently), esp. for Cryptosporidia, along with Roccal-D, bleach, etc.
I personally do not use ammonia (smell) in my habitat cleaning, but was wondering about this.
Any input?

I wouldn't use anything that my ig could lick and get sick from. You'd have to clean it's enviroment multple times I would think to make sure no more harmful chemicals can be licked or tasted by the curious ig.

A weak bleach solution should be used for disenfection, but the key is to RINSE WELL! I can't remember the formula (idiot lines on my bottle)
Of course, never mix ammonia with bleach, as I'm sure we all know... the result is toxic fumes that can cause serious lung damage or even death.
<gotta add the disclaimer>

1 part bleach, 10 parts water! ;D Or 1 to 5 if you are getting real serious!

Hey, Steph, I like idiot lines, lol. Have them all over my house.
Merlin, your bleach solution is the same as mine.
It just shocked me to read of ammonia as a disinfectant. It has been drummed into my head for years that it is NOT one.
Has anyone tried the vinegar/peroxide routine? I tried at the beginning, but vinegar STINKS!, lol. I'd much rather smell bleach!

She may be referring to quantanary(sp?) ammonia not household ammonia. Two very different products.
Can't say as I ever heard that one! Vinegar is a great glass cleaner but not (as far as I know) a disinfectant.
Another thing a friend of mine uses on his dozens of snake cages is to wipe them down with alcohol.

Will's vet said I could clean with 3% clorox and water and not worry about rinsing.

I would still rinse it. I know what the smell of bleach does to me and I can imagine what it would be like to be confined in it.
