I just made a visit to cagesbydesign.com, and purchased some things for Camille's cage...hopefully I will receive them around the time I am completing construction. I got a thing of assorted fake plants, a waterfall humidifier (Merlin and I discussed the pros and cons of this, and I decided to give it a shot in the dark), A hammock to put in the corner, and three 6" wide ramps to walk from level to level of shelving. It was way too much...but I just sold my books back to the school, so that;s where it came from...not out of my pocket, or the building money for the cage,....so look at that...I'm all ready above budget. YAY!

So you actually get money back for yourr books...
I bought a $135 Differential Equations Book, did not use it in class (prof hated the book but never told us to return it), went to sell it back (in new condition) and was told I would get $40.

Yes...I got a lot more than I thought I would...consider I only turned in 4 books, and 3 were in terrible condition...worked out very well.

From my experience they don't care about condition used they pay the same amount for a used book. This has been true through highschool and now in college.
Back in highschool I had it ingrained in me to markup my books. It works too, you don't lose notes and you instantly can see what the note references. At this point any non-fiction book I read gets written in.
You should see the condition of the Electromechanical Energy Devices And Power Systems book I bought new a week ago. Two chapters are highlighted and notated in three colours of pen and two colours of highlighter. Horrid for anyone wanting to pick up my book and use it but great for mu use. And I glued the class schedule/syllibus in the front. I paid $125 for this thing and I sure will get that out of it.

At least you'll get that... so many times the publishers put out a new edition, and the profs move on, then you're SOL because no one will need your book next term.

That is why I had the new book and not the one my friend had from the quarter before.
Last quarter I had a class where the first day our prof told us to return the book because it was not a very good tool. Then handed out a packet of 90 pages which was the "book" we would be using.
About half of my profs write their own book but don't publish it. Rather we buy a pack of papers ready for a binder ($6-$10) or get the file from their network drive.
