We put a shelf up in jims cage and he's not useing it much . How far away should he be from the lights right now the shelf is about 4 to 5 inches from the top of his cage is that too far because when he was on it he was reaching up and lifting his body as far up as he could to be closer to the lights. Thanks in advance, M.D.M.H.Z, and JIM

The ig itself should be 6-10" away from the UVB source, so from the igs back is where you should be measuring this from. You may eventually want to use a shelving bracket system so you can adjust the shelf height when Jim gets bigger.
Sometimes igs take a little while to adjust to new things, but to make sure there is nothing but him getting used to it, make sure the temps are right where he should be basking. 92-96 degrees with a digital indoor/outdoor thermometer. If he is trying to get closer to them, he might not be warm enough.
