i am keeping a young red iguana in a 100 gallon reptarium but have not finished buildng the clmbing structure . now my plan is to make him a pvc tree. it will be about 4 ft high and have different levels with diferent intensities of light. now everything comes together in my head except one major thing,... iguanas cant climb smooth slipery plastic. my original idea was to hot glue thin carpet around to make it esier but i dont know. does anyone know of anything i could use, maybe a spray on material similar to that fake rock material. any info will be helpfull and the sooner the better, i am constructing this thing tomorow and friday.it needs to be finished soon thanks. Hey welcome!! One sugesstion is you could wrap rope around the tube.. Have seen this in some enclosures. Not real sure what else, cause mine have the good ole tree limbs.

Yup! Sisal rope is great for PVC trees! You could also attach astroturf, but I think the sisal rope just looks better. You DO realize we require pictures! :-D

i acctualy just thought of coverng portions of the pvc in constuction caulk. its got chemicals that make it do the things it does, tell me what you think, my iguana would be able to realy grasp it well. its like a firmer version of styro-phome. or however you spell it.

just be careful when you use chemicals. make sure it dry all the way and then some more before you put him in there. If you can, check to see if its toxic for pets, since iguanas "taste" everything it could be a hazard.
Just something to look into.

A lot of things will not stick well to PVC, so the caulk will most likely end up falling off in chuncks which the iguana will likely swallow! I'd go with the rope.

Please be careful with caulking. A lot of those leave a chemical residue. It needs to be a non-toxic brand.

i talked to my dad today about caulk and he said no. its one of the only materials on his biohazard or something list. that would be a great idea but a greater NO. thnanks for your input thus far,. heres the temporary setup. its not good yet, i know. just give me 2 more days. cute lil iggy you've got there. One thing I'd like to mention about the set up you have is that the lamp is exposed to him. If he were to jump and sit on top of it he would seriously burn himself (or herself). It should be on the outside or if it's a UV, put a 1/2" wire mesh around it. Not chicken wire as it has a tendency to cut off digits. This will protect him from burns. You could also go the way of puttin it up top with the other light cutting a hole the diameter of the light shade and still using the mesh place it on top of the reptarium (where the hole would be) or create a cupped mesh thing that drops through the hole for the light to sit in. From there you can get just a small peice of 1 x 3 to go across those bars at the top there and he can laze on it. Igs like to have a "platform" to plop down on it seems. Another note, you might want to consider expanding on the space he has before going through all the intricate decorating plans. He will need more room no more than 6 months from now. Best to give more height but also enough length for two of him minimum, then enough width for him to turn around without touching each wall, for how little he is now 2ft would do but future wise...3-4ft is what they need. He's got it good now though since you are taking the steps to get things perfect for him...Lucky lil iggy
