FROM THE ADMIN: While we understand that people have the right to care for their animals as they see fit, Iguana Zone does NOT agree with the use of ANY substrate that is made of small particles. If the iguana accidentally ingests particles, it can get lodged in his digestive tract and cause a deadly blockage or other damage. For more information please see the "substrate" section of Melissa Kaplan's "Iguana Care Feeding and Socialization" www.anapsid.org/pdf/icfs.pdf
Hey everyone, yes I have to admit it is a subtrate in the floor of his cage. It is a very fine cork based absorbent that our vet recamended for him. He said that it would not hurt him and we have never seen Iggy even try to eat it, lick at it. It is just about the size of a pin head. Iggy seems to really like it and we have had aboslutly no problems with him and or the sutrate in his cage. He spends most of his time up on the rocks or in the pond or inside his little log cabin that he has inside of his enclosure. Bam-Bam doesn't have anything but lanolium in her cage and Miss zak has news paper in the flloor of her cage. Sense we have put this in his cage, his feet and his toes have made a full recovery and have no signs that they were ever even sore. Thanks for the concern, we are watching him close and he seems to just ignore the stuff on the floor. Debbie Iggy Bam-Bam and Miss zak.

Hi Debbie-
<shakes head> I've said this about 100 times now:
Yes, it's true that he may never have an impaction from the particulate substrate. But, there is the possibility.
Why would you ever take a chance on something going wrong with your Iguana by placing him in a "potentially" dangerous situation.
It IS your Iguana. I choose not to gamble with mine.
I'll be happy to provide plenty of links with articles and stories about people who said the exact same thing that you do and lost their Igs to impaction.
I can understand that it helped heal his feet, but it is time to remove it.
Most people think of impaction as an immediate illness. Some impaction take months and even years to build up in the Iguanas intestines until one day you walk in and there your Iguana lies, dead on the floor. Then you'll take him to that same Vet who recommended the substrate and he'll reel in anguish when the Necropsy shows an impaction. He'll likely never recommend it again, but it will be too late for your Iguana.
Please, for the sake of your Iguana, remove the substrate and find another suitable alternative.

I do agree with Tesa, Dom, and Lyn. I think it was a great temporary solution to help Iggy's feet heal, but you really should seriously consider removing it now that his feet are better. Or you could tape his mouth shut! JUST KIDDING!!

it is being removed as we speak.
point made. I do not want to be baned from this sight for improper care of my iggys. :'
P.S. I love my iggys very much and would never deliberatly do anything to harm them.

Thanks Patrick, Miss Zak is doing just great! She has her figure back and is weighing in at 8.8 pounds and her liver and her kidneys have made a full recovery and I am getting ready to post a pic of her on here for all to see.

Hi Debbie-
We don't ban people for learning! We'd all be gone if that were the case.
Glad to hear you are removing the particulate substrate.
I've e-mailed you privately about all of this.
