Good evening guys and gals, Just arrived home with our first rescued Iguana. A fellow that used to work for my wife had Ted, he broke up with his girlfriend and Ted was a casualty of war. Through the grape vine we heard he did not want his Iguana anymore and was starving it to death. Now there is a reason to slap someone with a hammer if I ever heard one. We discussed it, and not really wanting another Ig, or really being set up to take care of him, we brought him home tonight. I was in touch with a fellow from down around the Toronto area who runs a reptile rescue, and he has agreed to help with adopting him out. If we still have him by the time the reptile show rolls around in Toronto, he will take him. Ted, or Lucky as the wife calls him, looks to be severely underweight. The base of his tail is really caved in and his legs are very thin. He had his face buried in the water dish before I even put it down on the shelf. And drank for ten minutes straight. I spent my weekend building a new enclosure for Lucky. A mid size at four feet wide by two feet deep by almost four feet high. It is a world better than the little box he was in. He is supposed to be about two years old, but he is less than half the size of Lothar. Poor little bugger.

I'm so glad he found you, LP. He looks to be in pretty bad shape. But I'm sure you'll do a great job bringing him back from the brink. ;D

Thanks for the vote of confidence IK. I took this picture after an hour and a half under a proper uv light. Notice in the first pictures he had no green colour. What an immediate change for the better.

Good UVB seems to have healing qualities. Hopefully he doesn't have any major health issues. If the guy wasn't feeding him, he probably wasn't giving him proper heat or UVB either.
I don't understand people though. If the guy didn't want his iguana anymore, he should have took him to a shelter or humanely put him down.
Thank you for taking him. Hope you find him a loving forever home soon.

Awww! Some people are so heartless I'm so glad you took him in, that iguana would not have been long for this world. He already looks better than in the first pics. Keep the pics coming, I'm sure he'll be changing for the better over the next few weeks

Poor thing! It ought to be legal to take some people and chastise them severely about the head neck and shoulders! Good for you for taking the poor ig in. It may just be the underweight condition but Ted looks a bit like a girl to me.

I agree with Merlin..."he" looks like a "she"...very much. Hydrating is one of the biggies...and she seems to be doing that on her own. Bell peppers in the diet along with squash will help immensely. Thank you for taking her in. She needed someone to care...

good job you rescued Ted,he looks very thin and his colouration is dull.but i suspect this is because he hasnt had the right lighting and heating.he obviously was really dehydrated by the sounds of it but atleast hes in safe hand now.hopefully soon he be a green iguana not a grey and black one.even after half an hour in the right lights and temps.he looks alot better.even though hes obviously got quite a while before his in the right condition and his conformation will hopefully sort itself out.but hes such a lovely iggy.well done for rescuing him.fab work hope he gets alot better.

Thank you for all your replies guys/gals. Surprisingly enough, Lucky (as I am starting to call him/her) ate a fare bit today. Plenty of squash and papaya on top of the standard fair of greens and Kaplan's salad. A good dose of multi vitamin as well as some extra calcium powder added as well. The only heat source the little guy had was the dreaded heat rock. I have checked for thermal burns and none are apparent as of yet. And no light source whatever except the light coming through the window on the other side of the room.

Great Job. His colors look neat even though he is not green. I have heard that it is possible for igs to have naturally "weird" colors like this and be 100% healthy. (although he is obviously not 100% healthy because of his past).
Has anyone else heard of this?
Anyways, great job taking Lucky from his previous owner I'm sure that he appreciates it. BTW, how is his attitude? Was he a mean guy when you got him because of the mistreatment?

I haven't heard of a healthy adolesent iguana being grey like that, except when shedding of course. The last one I saw that was that color also had a severe case of MBD and was badliy dehydrated. He was one of 5 igs and a turtle that I tranported to CoRHS after they were taken in from several animal shelters in Colorado Springs. The grey one was the sickest of the bunch, and also the meanest, but I can't say that I blame him...people had not been good to him.

oh my, how did you not kill this guy who neglected an innocent thing?! I can't stand that. Seriously, i mean, how much of a chump do you have to be. "::weeping:: my girlfriend dumped me so I'm going to give up on everything and kill the things that don't deserve to be killed"... seriously, he deserved dumpage in my book. the big jerk.
sorry- it just seems like people take out their problems on the things they shouldn't-- i.e. children, pets, friends... I mean, come on, life is NOT long enough to wallow in ourselves, get over-it... or SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS! (or get serious help)!!!!
basically, I wish I could have come with you to get the iguana so I could've slapped the guy.
Thanks the Lord for your heart... I'm sure Lucky will be well again and will find a place...
ps. He looks like my PeaTree- PeaT's is not very green on top anymore- he went from a pale green to ... now he's more of a brown/dust color (on top)... he's a *special* breed... <3

Latest update on Lucky (nee Ted), The first photo I posted was just after arriving home with Lucky, here is the latest one for comparison: I gave both Lothar and Lucky a small plate of fresh fruit when I got in from work today, Both went a little crazy over it. A little seedless watermelon, some papaya, a small slice of apricot and some melon. I am sure Lucky is thinking he is in Ig Heaven. I have been feeding him 24 hours a day, he is still eating a fair bit after lights out. Getting a bit less jumpy but I know it will take time to gain his trust. I swear he actually smiled at me when I gave him his treat of fruit today. He had so much of it, he can barely move at the moment.
