TEXTTEXTHey everyone! I'm so glad I found this awesome site with such nice people! I recently joined the yahoo group with iguanas, but its not as "freindly", or so I felt. I'll start off with introducing myself and my ig, Fluffy, he is going to 6 months old on the 23rd, I bought him from a pet swap for $4, WOW!! good price for the healthy guy. Dont worry though, he came from a wonderful breeder, (G&G Farm, in Palatka, Fl) and was only 9 weeks when I got him. hes the 3rd iguana I've had and by far the most moody...as well as the only male. Maybe its the name??? I think its cute, and its so funny to see ppl's expressions when they say "wheres your dog, Fluffy?" and I show them my scaly green little guy, no idea why they assume hes a dog... But about me, I'm 18 years old, and have aways loved reptiles, well all animals, but my first pet was an ig, and I fell in love....who wouldnt? I live in Gainesville, Fl and I enjoy learning and reading as much as I can on igs to ensure his ultimate happiness. But I have a few questions maybe someone can clear up for me...? lately Fluffers (his nickname) has become VERY nippy and moody, can he be in his breeding season already? hes usually very docile with me, but lately has been acting like I'm a complete stranger or just turning his nose up and ignoring me as he does my boyfriend, I hope I'm not doing anything wrong. They other ques. is it normal for them to become jealous? we recently got a rankins dragon (small version of the beardy) and since then hes given her snooty looks and listlessy stares off at her cage, sometimes narrowing his eyes.... any advice? thanks bunches, oh, and you guys have beautiful igs! I cant wait for my little boy to grow up, then when he does I'll probably wish he was tiny again..hehe looking forward to talking with yall!

Hey Ashley, welcome to the Zone....well you said this is your 3rd ig...what happened to the other 2...How do you have Fluffy set up for a cage, heat, light, UVB...I think being moody is normal for the age of the ig...he is trying to "scare" you away so he can do what he wants... dont give in to him...and what tells you its a male? usually it is impossible to telll till at leat 1 1/2 to 2 yrs old...Have a great day....Lyn

the first one, Julius, was given to my mom and I when I was 3, and when my mom had her other baby, (3 years later) she gave him to my aunt bc there was going to be a newborn in the house, she still had him up untill 6 years ago, he was a very happy guy. My second was when I was 13 and lived with my Dad, she was a birthday present. But my dad lives down south, (Near Vero Beach) and he built Liz (named after the lizard from the magic school bus ) a HUGE enclosure outside for her to enjoy herself in, and its not transferable. He also has "Meaty", her male companion, and when I moved here for school I didnt want to seperate them. and I couldnt have provided her with the space and enclosure that shes had for 5 years up here. But I still see her lots. As for Fluffy, my boyfreind built him a 5' by 5' enclosure, and he has all the right stuff, (lighting, heats, and a cooler place) The guy I bought him from told me he was a male, I think he had him checked out. Every reptile person that sees him says he probably is as well. Dont worry, I never give in. Thats the main thing I try to stress to my bf. he usually just trys to leave Fluff alone if hes being bad, which is a BIG no-no.

Hi Ashley and welcome to IZ! I'm in a bit of a hurry right now. (New baby in the family yesterday and I'm the only family in town so it's on me to take care of things they need) I just wanted to acknowledge you and say that I agree with Lyn. And yes, I think they get jealous! ;D Glad to have you!

Hi Ashley-
Welcome to Iguana Zone. Glad to have you here.
Post pics of your Ig when you can. We love pics.
Sounds like a typical baby Ig if you ask me. Establish alpha-position now with him. Can't possibly be first heat at such a young age, so I think he's (?) trying to tame YOU! LOL
As Lyn suggested, 7 months is just way to young to know. They all look like one or the other. And many surprise us when they go actually give up their gender. Just look at all the Igs out there with gender confused names! LOL
Post often!

If the breeder hasn't had him (?) probed or sent off for a DNA for sexing then you can't be sure of sex, and maybe Fluffy may be a Fluffette... My daughter houses in the dorm. She can't have furries, so she has a fish named Fluffy. Patience and more patience in taming. Sounds like he's acting normal to me.

Welcome to the zone!
I knew Gil was male when he was about 9 months old... and yes, I did have a season. He didn't "act male," but he did masturbate.
I agree with Dominick... establish your dominance before he does. And send us pics!

hey yeveryone, we just came back from a weekend in Tampa, for my cousins cheer competition @ the state fair.... Can you beleive they are giving igs away as prizes?!?! it mortified me, they give them to these ppl that dont know anything about them along with "ig diet" according to them, all they eat, (these gross pelet things) and "a cage so you wont need one" these tiny little critter keepers that one would put crickets in....I was SO mad, as if that wasnt bad enough it was FREEZING outside and they had about 30 igs in one tiny cage, about the size of a 10 gal, standing upright, and they were so unhealthy looking, VERY skinny and lethargic. ones eyes were so swollen that he couldnt even open them, and as if the food in there wasnt bad enough, they had NO water, and nasty shriveled up broccoli, I tryed to tell the guy that he shouldnt feed broccoli, and that was inhumane and he was SO rude about it!. It made me so mad, my heart goes out to those little guys. as for Fluffy, he seems to be doing alot better now, hes not giving us any problems. *knock on wood* but has been eating A LOT more, maybe he was just grumpy bc he was going through a growth spurt?? ok well thats all for now, I'll talk to yall later. *Ash & Fluffy*

There is a Yahoo group called Carnival_igs that are trying to change laws in the states the individuals are in to try and make it where ANY animal coud not be used as a prize in any way...igs, bunnies, etc. Exemptions would be 4-H type organizations.
It's very hard to go from bill to law and one has met with opposition so far...in NC I believe...the bill was killed, but perstistence and slight word changes can bring it back to life. If you're interested in trying to make a difference...give it a go.

Here's the link to Carnival_Ig e-group: groups.yahoo.com/group/CarnivalIguana/?yguid=161089826You can also report them to the local Humane Society. Regardless of the event, if they are mis-treating animals the Humane Society can investigate and fine them! Post to the e-group. The more folks we have working on this, the better chances the Iguanas have. Good Luck!
