Well first let me introduce myself. My name is Dan. I formerly studied and kept and bred herps of all types my entire life. from Dendrobates to Pythons. Well, my life has changed in recent years and I no longer have the need to have a herp room full of 40+ animals. So i slowly got rid of my animals. I guess you could say I had OCD back then. Well my life has changed tremendously and I thought I was ready to add 1 animal that I could devote my time to and really care for correctly.
I wanted a social animal. An iguana was my choice as someone at work told me they were giving one away. I said i'd take it. I've always been well educated with iguanas although I never thought i'd have the time with all the other animals. So I took him. I think it's a him. Anyway, he's a year old and about 22 inches long. Pretty hefty. I actually haven't seen him eat yet. He hasn't immediately adjusted perfectly. I am currently building him a very large enclosure out of wood with plexi glass doors. Anyway his fresh food bowl right now consists of a little cilantra, dandilion greens, spinach, and some brussel sprouts. His conditions are well and my digital thermometer is reading good temps. He's a little cramped in a smaller glass tank for a week. Nothing really I can do about that but the enclosure should be ready by friday next week.
His tempermant is ok. When I get him out of the cage he sits on my hand and doesn't squirm quite too much. I've had to restort to wearing a glove taking him out simply because he bite me REALLY REALLY hard! I've been bite by everything but I never thought a 2ft iguana would bring me to VERY close to getting stitches. So until he calms down and settles in more the glove has to stay on as i don't think i'd like to take another bite.
I hope to share my experiences with you guys and i'll post pics soon. He hasn't relieved himself yet and the owner said he did so in his water bowl every morning,. I really hope his appetite comes back soon. In a month he'll get his first check up.
One more thing, would his new cage benefit from a rainmaker misting system to mist him a couple times a day when i'm not home?
Great forum !
