STL is from tip of snout to end of tail tip. The reason that both measurements are used is many captive iguanas have lost sections of tail. The snout to vent length will not alter.

An easy way to take a measurement is while your ig is relaxing...get a piece of twine and go from the nose to the vent and tie the first knot. Then from the nose to the tail tip...tie another. Then you can take both measurements without trying to get a tape measure in there. Especially with retractable ones...if you have a skittish ig this will scare the dickens out of it if the lock should happen to release.

Another good way is to set the iguana on a linoleum floor with a pattern of equal-sized squares. Get his snout lined up, more or less, with the edge of a square, and then just count the squares to the tail and mutiply. You can lay a small object on the floor at the end of the tail to mark the floor for measurement of a partial square. The cool thing about doing it this way is that the ig can't get a grip on the floor, so its really easy to hold him in one place, gently, and not risk hurting him if he struggles a little bit.
An iguana...struggle? Nah!!! ;D

i measured gizmo again today.she 9 and a half inches "svl" we were told male when we got gizmo but i think female no.i send some photos to see if any-one has a idea of gender.but her vent seems to have a buldge on the bit near her back legs but no buldge as yet on tail/or head and her pores seem very small.

Gizmo is certainly long enough to show male traits, so I think you might be right in thinking Gizmo is a female.

My baby Emerald is 15 inches STL can anyone give me a rough estimate on his or her age? I'm thinking 7-9 months. I've had him/her since May 14th 07.

The very first thread gives you the guidelines. Your thoughts sound about as good as anyone else can give...;-)
