Hi all - Since it's summer and the house is warm again I've decided to build 3 tall open cages in my living room for Dirt, Tiamat, and Vendrall right in front of the huge picture window they all enjoy staring at the world through(it's like T.V. for iguanas they'll stare outside all day if I let them). Now the bad part is that my money is a little tied up at the moment so I was hoping for some cheaper cage ideas from you guys - right now I'm planning on taking out some of the thinner pine/maple/birch trees out around my house(I've got about a half acre of woods on my property and no one will stop me from taking out trees near the railroad tracks behind my house) to build cage frames but what is a cheap type of screen I can use for the walls? Right now I'm thinking Mosquito net but i'm unsure not sure if it's strong enough to stand up to Vendrall's claw's and he's only about 40" so he's still going to get bigger. Any ideas?

Mosquito net won't work,..too flimsy. There is a mesh that Veronica uses on her PVC cage that may be applicable to your situation. She can tell you where to get it.

www.industrialnetting.com/plastic_extruded.htm is where mine came from. They offer free sample packets. This stuff is meant to last! It's been outside for going on 4 summers now with no signs of being weathered...at all! I've been though thousands of zipties though!!

My bf and I use a pet screening material for screen doors. It's never been used outside but we lined our habitat door with it and he use to climb it when he was smaller but now he can't after freshly cut nails. It's a plastic screen/mesh that allows clear sight but the holes are no small nothing can get in or out. We buy it in the screendoor area of home depot. A roll or so is usually $15-30 depending on the thickness, grade and size.

The only problem with window/door screen is that it has a hard time holding up to adult weights and the claws often tear right through them after a time...

This is a heavy duty "Pet Screening Material" Meant to keep large dogs and children from breaking through the screen. So far it's held up for Three years with Eki climbing on it, hanging on it, us poking him to get down. Not even the staples have a problem holding up when hammered into the wood. It's held up to his climbing, and sharp nails.

Let's be sure to state this when suggesting this type of screen then. I would hate for someone to get regular screen at the suggestion of "It's a plastic screen/mesh that allows clear sight but the holes are no small nothing can get in or out." and then their ig get loose... Personally - I would have to actually see this stuff in action before suggesting it as a medium myself. I guess there are people who use it successfully, but it still makes me worry a bit with the claws of an ig compared to a child's weight distribution pushing out...or the blunt of dog claws. Does it have a weight (or force) limit stated on the packaging?

This is similar to what we use. Only we don't buy it that large of bulk. We normally buy about 5-10feet rolls I think that are like 3 feet tall. And costs about $20-40 tops roughly.. Home Depot Meshlink modified by VeronicaWish I was at my boyfriends we have an un-opened package of the screening material we bought too much last time just for a project. I'll look into it and get back to you on weight, etc. But we've used it for Eki for the past three years and he's never torn through it yet.

Unfortunately - pet resistant doesn't mean pet-proof. For smaller igs this will work great. For 15-25 lb adults...I would hate to test this on a permanent enclosure for an full adult ig.

I used a black 1/2 " pvc mesh I found at home depot (kinda like the wire stuff, but PVC). spike hasn't put a dent in it, and I can state from experience, it will also hold up to a 110 pound lab mix whom I'm still not sure how she got on the counter...

We had a golden retriever when I was growing up that could get pumpkin pies at the rear corner of the counter top that we never did figure out how she got up there, either.
