Oops! New problem! That bulb is NOT what you need. Its just a fancy version of a household light bulb, producing visible light and heat. You need a bulb that generates UVB light. And if it doesn't specifically say UVB on the package,...it isn't. UVB is an absoute necessity and enables the ig to process the calcium in its diet into a usable form. Otherwise it pulls the calcium it needs from its bones. NOT a good thing in a convelescing animal. Even a healthy ig deprived of UVB exposure will end up deformed and die. You need to look into a mercury vapor type of lamp. With the limitations of your little one a flourescent is not really going to do it since a flourescent light only produces UVB light for a distance of 10-12 inches from the bulb.

reptileuv.com/ You can get mercury vapor bulbs here. They last a year! before needing replaced. And as lomg as its warm enough out take him outside for some natural sun. You asked about vitamins, I very lightly sprinkle my Igs food with just a plain calcium powder. Make sure it does NOT contain D-3.

Yes to the calcium. What youre looking at just produces heat. Go to the top of the list where it says 120 Volt (USA) and click on the links below Self Ballasted or External Ballasted Kits

I use the RepCal calciuim as well as the Repcal Herptavite Vitamins. Every week or so I lightly sprinkle both on the food. Sort of like I was salting the food.
And just out of curiosity how did you come up with the name Igu?

LOL... it's from the name Iguana. We said either Igu or Ana, since we don't know what sex it is yet we went with Igu.
About the light... Only the fluorescent get put 12 in. away from them, what about the HVB and HVA ? How far ?
Once again I appreciate you guys and gals taking the time in helping out a rookie. It never crossed my mind that I would have an iguana one day. It's a whole new experience for me.

You mean UVB and UVA? The florescent is useless more than 12 inches from the animal while the MVB cannot be closer than 12 inches. They are that much more powerful.

Perfect that's what I wanted to know, Thanks Merlin. I had the UVA about 15 inches away from him. I was getting scared cause I saw one of his legs turning black and the spines on his back were turning black too. Now that I put him in his bath they went back to normal. Now in the new tank that's 75 gallons the light a little bit higher.
jfogle78, I got the tank. I had to set it in the living room cause it doesn't fit in the room. Thanks.

OK, so I got my 75 gallon tank. I bath him daily, he's got a pretty good appetite. The humidity is at 76-80%... Still working on the heat. I have a problem with the mesh... Its not made of steal but of that material used in patios to keep the mosquito's out. So, when I put the lamp with the heat, I see smoke coming from the holes in the lamp. I guess I need a bigger lamp that the bulb doesn't touch the mesh, correct? or is it going to smoke anyways?.
Do you think any of these bulbs is good ? It says it has both UVB and UVA. Has anyone used it before ?160 wattswww.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752435100 wattswww.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752615

Both those bulbs will do what you need but they have been known to be a bit problematic and suffer from premature burn out. The Megarays are much more dependable. You need to replace that mesh. It will melt if it gets too hot. Also the openings in the mesh are too fine and will shade out most of your UVB. You need openings of at least 1/6 inch and 1/4 would be preferable. Also a healthy ig can shred that type of mesh and escape.

I recommend you call the people and describe your set up so you can determine what will work safest for your Ig. I can tell you though that the 60 watt zoo is going to be too much.
