my iguana has lately some occasional symptoms of breathing problems and i'm afraid it's because of low moisture... but i'd like to listen to your opinions. once in a while he lays with his mouth a bit open (not wide) and after 1-2 days i usually see something on his lips like very dry saliva, almost like glue, which eventually becomes something like skin a drops... i'm a bit scared coz i read that sometimes it can be caused by breathing problems due to low levels of moisture :/ lorenzo (my ig) is free roaming in the room and i have made a special place for him to bask with heating sources and a ball of water near him for moisture (which i know is not the solution so i ordered a humidifier) can you suggest anything else to make him even more comfortable? (BUT without having to built any cage, coz he likes to be absolutely free and i'm fine with that too)

This requires a vets expertise. It sounds like it could be one of two things - either an upper respiritory infection (URI) or stomatitus (mouth rot). Both need an antibiotic regimen. Please seek veterinary help. www.herpvetconnection.comwww.arav.org <---click on "Members" www.anapsid.org/vets

But thats one of the problems with free roaming igs. The temperatures at which we are comfortable and the temperatures that THEY need are VERY different.

Make sure your not using any type of aresol sprays around him or harsh cleaning chemicals. One day Angus was gagging and coughing, and I couldnt figure out why then I smelled my sons body spray. He wasnt thinking and used it in the living room. Poor Angus! He was fine after about a half hour.

the bad thing is that i've never took him to the vet coz the only vet we got for igs is 1-2 hours drive from my house! how will he react to a long drive like that? does anyone have any suggestions about how i should carry him? :/ i even thought going alone to the vet with some speciments from the saliva (i gathered it) for tests but i think this is a temporary solution... he needs to be checked by a vet anyway

the good thing is that now with the humidifier he looks better, but i don't want to risk it...

get a pet carrier, and get some 2 liter bottles of hot water, put them in the bottom, and cover them in a towel.... your little man should be fine for the drive.

well the news is that the vet checked my iguana and said he seems quite healthy, and he took some blood for tests and samples for salmonella tests etc and I'll have more news tomorrow morning He suggested that probably it's a minor problem of metabolism which can be dealed with some extra calcium So I'm quite happy coz I asked him a lot of questions and he seemed to believe I do a good job More tomorrow!

today i remembered that i haven't posted yet the news!! so the vet called and told he was right, and that it's a minor problem of metabolism in its very beginning so it's ok, and that the ig lacks of calcium so i should give him extra calcium in his food! and he also suggested a pill called baytril for 5 times (1 every 2 days) that's all!

Great to hear he is ok. But why did he prescribe Baytril? Does he have some kind of infection?

Great to hear he is ok. But why did he prescribe Baytril? Does he have some kind of infection? hi yeah your right if im right in remembering baytrill is for primary or secondary infections of bacteria isent it so i would say the vet must have some concern based on this nature i think i would just call the vet if i was you to double check
