I would like to begin potty training my little iguana. He/she is about 5 months old. I have read that bathtime is a good potty training exercise, and that if you give a bath every morning and night and wait for him to poop, he will begin to do it in water, then all you have to do is put a water dish in his enclosure. This seems to make sense to me.
I give him baths about two or three times a week in the tub. He seems to hate it for the first 3 or 4 minutes as he swims and climbs around franticaly for an exit. Then, after he realized it isn't so bad, or there is no exit to be found, he chills out and floats in the tub. I always provide the same branch for him, which he only uses occasionally. The problem is, he hardly ever poops in the tub... Could this be because I usually give the bath when I get home from work around 5 or 6? Are there other good ways to potty train?

You need to give the bath early in the morning. If he has already "gone" for the day a bath in the evening is futile.

training in the morning really isn't working out at all... I haven't been consistent with it at all... can I train him/her to just go at night when I get home? I figure that if every day I get him/her to poop in the tub, then he/she will start to get it and just do that every time... and eventually I can just put a big water dish in the bottom of the enclosure and that will suffice as a "Potty"

Probably not. When they need to go they will go. Its up to you to beat them to it to train. Try putting a kitty litter pan with a little water in it in the cage. Ofthen they will just use that on their own..

I figure that if every day I get him/her to poop in the tub, then he/she will start to get it and just do that every time... and eventually I can just put a big water dish in the bottom of the enclosure and that will suffice as a "Potty" Most [most I say] of the time they don't have the desire to poop or pee Early in the morning.. When lights come on they will spend up to 4-5 hours of basking. Need to do that before they think they are alive!! Now if you have the good UVB that they bask under.. Then they will venture off the basking shelf to seek food. The reason most young don't seek the bath tub's that we offer is because they are still paranoid of the bottom of the cage.. Hence!! we need to DO the Baths In the Tub on a Daily basis ... As they grow old they will use that tub of water that you put in the cage... I have a 2 year old that pretty much fights me to take her out of her cage,, then she kinda gets calm.. goes right to the bathtub.. is in there for about 10 min. Does her thing and then we get her out.. Hold her for about 15-20 min.. Then she goes back into the cage.. Floor first.. Has to climb the dreaded barrier that she doesn't want to.[needs to get used to it.. the floor] Whole point here is that they are NOT DUMB.. Love them as we do and always willl....
