Nice to meet you all. Spunky was in my lap this morning asking to check out iguanas on the net and we found this forum. I haven't been part of an iguana forum since I first got on the net in 1996.
I've only owned two iguanas, but they've each been the best teachers ever. Kiwi, my first one, passed away in 2006 at the age of 14. She was the model iguana - always calm and docile. A very good girl and a best friend.
Spunky and I have been together 11 years in March 2011. He was supposedly a year old when he came to live with me, but even considering stunted growth from the crappy situation he was rescued from, I have a hard time believing he was much more than 6 months old, so we just count his age by how many years we've been together.
Spunky is a big, strong, handsome guy now; sweet and docile. He wasn't always that way tho - in fact, the first 7 years of his life I thought surely I'd been stuck with one of the worst, craziest reptiles ever. I didn't know if it was caused by being male, or perhaps he was wild caught, or maybe just insane from his experiences, but he was a tough nut to crack. I truly thought he would never outgrow his psychosis. I committed to him tho, and about 3 years ago his attitude flipped and I finally stopped threatening to have iguana burgers for dinner. He is now calm enough to be let out of the cage for free-roaming (thought that would NEVER happen) and sit in my lap to surf the net or watch a movie. I dunno what changed his mind, but I'm sure glad he did.
I've attached a pic of Spunks... not sure yet if it will work. If not, be patient and I'll figure it out. He's about 8 pounds (not that I've weighed him but he's about as heavy as a gallon of milk), and he's only 3 feet long (total) because part of his horrible childhood included half his tail actually ROTTING OFF from infection and neglect. He's regenerated about 12 inches of tail (wow!) but of course it's never as long as the original.
