is bed a beast good for iggies?? Hi Chris26! Welcome to IZ! Not sure if Bed A Beast is a safe substrate for iguanas, or if its dangerous. One thing I'm having difficulty with is finding any on-line information about what its made out of. It kinda reminds me of other products that have been on the market...such as CalciSand...that made the same "completely harmless if ingested" claims. That claim was proven to be false. Unfortunately, there are a lot of hacks out there making pet products that don't really have any concern at all for the well-being of the animals they are selling products for. OK...evil corporate product rant mode off. LOL. Maybe those companies aren't as callous as I believe they are. Maybe they DO care, and make sure that their products contain nothing an iguana wouldn't encounter in the wild, material-wise. They will also tell you their products are used in zoos all over the world. That's all well and good, but something that NONE of that takes into account is that an iguana is a highly intelligent creature who needs LOTS of mental stimulation. They get bored easily, and just like any other highly intelligent creature that is bored, they can often end up engaging in self-destructive behavior to cope with the boredom. As hard as we try to keep our igs entertained, they are very unlikely to have the same mental stimulation that they get in the wild...or in zoos that have lots of money to spend on elaborate habitats. We all do our best. In the end...harmless or harmful...you're being sold a product that will regularly separate you from a good portion of your hard-earned cash. It costs more than an ordinary newspaper, and really has no advantages...and is yet to be proven as being safe. I'd just stick with whole sheets of ordinary newspaper, which has never been documented to harm an iguana.
