All I know about mdf I just looked up on wikipedia- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium-density_fibreboard -and it doesn't seem safe by itself, if you get it seal it very well (there's another issue, I don't remember what would be a safe sealant/stain/paint, perhaps talk to someone at Home Depot or Lowes). I used stained plywood (I don't remember the type) and I have towels on the ramps, linoleum covering on the main big shelf, and a pillow on the top shelf. Linoleum wouldn't be a bad idea. As for growing edible plants in the enclosure, the iguana would dig in the dirt, probably eat some, and leave you with a mess and a dead broken plant. I've thought about it before too but in the end it's going to be: iguana 1, plant 0.
If only I had something to eat. . . . . mmmm pumpkin flowers
