I just purchased an iguana from our pet shop here in town. I picked out the one that was the tamest. After researching on the Internet I found out it's not good to get the tamest one. Anyways I got him home and it has been two days so far. He likes to sleep a lot and he only eats when I hand feed him. If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to say something. Also before I got him at the pet shop he had those little bugs on him. They sprayed him with some stuff to get them off and I haven't seen anymore of them since they did that.

Well I just gave him his first bath and he drank quite a bit of water. I think he might just be a little dehydrated

Hey Turbo Welcome to the Iguana Zone. I think the reason why people might be saying not to get the "tamest" iguana is because pet stores often have unhealthy iguanas and being "tame" might just be illness. Parasites are not uncommon at pet stores but its good to hear you haven't seen anymore, keep an eye out though they might just be temporarily subdued. His lack of apatite may be stress related, that's not uncommon, or it may be illness but I can't say. Its good that he was drinking, fluids are always helpful. You may want to add some juicy types of fruit to his diet to get him re-hydrated such as watermelon or cantaloupe. What have you been feeding him/her? Pet stores might recommend iguana pellets but those aren't really healthy. If you do feed him/her some pellets soak them first to help re-hydrate instead of those soaking up the liquids your iguana already has. I hope this has helped keep us posted. -Jenna

Thank you for the helpful information. When I get off work I'm going to get some watermelon for him. I mostly feed him lettuce that's pretty green and spinach. I have strawberries and bananas right now for his snack. I'm going change my name on here. My name is Ryan lol and my iguana's name is Turbo . I will be on here a lot since I have never had an iguana thus I will have questions down the road.

Well then, hello Ryan Spinach, bananas, and strawberrys are good for iguanas but lettuce lacks nutrition. It seems to be a pretty common mistake for new iguana owners and if not realized it can lead to malnutrition. There's a list of good foods for iguana meals in the Diet section of this forum and it has a link to more options at the Green Iguana Society. Iguanas generally need to eat plants with high calcium and they need UVB to absorb it. Lacking one of these two things leads to Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) and this is a huge issue that pet store owners really should tell everyone who wants to own an iguana but Very often (pretty much always) they don't. Sorry if that seemed a bit over the top; I just have a bone to pick with pet stores because they ill prepare new owners but I bear you no hard feelings for their lack of responsibility. So anywho, post away whenever you have a question (or a picture of the little guy).

Have you figured it out yet? I assumed you had since you posted a picture but I thought I would ask just in case you had another problem
