Willie has been doing something new for a few weeks now. He sticks out his cute little tongue alot. Sometimes he's tasting his basking log, but most of the time he's just sticking it out. I don't thinks he's dehydrated. Nearly a daily bath and lots of misting which he loves. It seems something developmental, but, I'm not sure. Also at times he scratches the side of his tank. I dson't think it's too small, but I sure am glad I've ordered a big one. He's still a little guy ( 6-7) months in a 75 gallon tank. Any thoughts on these two things?

Is he just flicking his tounge or is his mouth wide open?
If he is just flicking his tounge ....this is normal he smells with his tounge ..and if you are misting often he may be getting moisture this way.
If his mouth is wide open and gaping ...It could mean he is overheating ... and I would want to check temps as glass aquatiums can overheat quickly .
Quote from G.I.S
"To understand ig-proofing, you need to understand some basic iguana behaviors. One is tongue-flicking. Like snakes, iguanas have a Jacobson’s organ in the roof of their mouth. In order to smell or taste something, they have to flick their tongue out and then press it against the organ."

Hi Nance-
I'd ask the same question as James: Is the tongue just hanging out, kinda like relaxed or is it just over active?
Hmm. Checking to see what I can find about Iggy tongues.
Let us know.

"but most of the time he's just sticking it out."
You mean he is sticking it out and LEAVING it out, or just a flick out and then back in??

I'm sorry I wasn't more clear. He's just flicking it. James might have the answer that he's bring in moisture from the air, but i just remembered he has done it when I take him out of tub. I checked MK and she suggests it's just about smelling. He's a very interactive ig and maybe he's just checking out his environment more and more. He is GRUMPY today. Bit me twice. He hasn't done that in SO long. I can't let him scare me off... so the second bite i scolded him loud! He was shocked and then I could pick him up.

I wouldnt worry about the flicking of the tounge .... Yoda does this as well ....he is just dooing what Igs do ..... As for the biting ... Did you get bit ...reaching in to the cage ( aquarium) If so this is probably due to the fact that your ig is just over protective of the little space he has ..you will find that once that new larger CBD enclosure is all set up this problem will be gone... Yoda used to freak out when I reached in for him... I moved his tank to where it was higher than my eye level and now I have to reach up...and in rather than cast a huge shadow like some terrible preditor and he is much calmer now when I attempt to take him out ....I cant remember the name but IGS have a THIRD EYE ...on top of there head as well that senses light and dark ...and this EYE can sense a preditor from above even when a Ig is sleeping . Just my Opinion.... Dom/Tesa please comment..... James -Yoda

The third eye you are talking about is the "parietal eye" I don't guess there is a specific answer here, cause each ig is different. In my case.....I put Thrasher in a nice big cage and the lil brat decided she was a queen. She sits up high and surveys her kingdom and we paupers are NOT allowed in without a fight!! ;D Some are just more territorial than others.....no matter what size their space is.
