I was just wondering, does anyone use a heating pad for their iguana? I was hoping that a heating pad would help train Zilla to lay still in my lap so he could be more comfortable with me. It's funny, he'll crawl over it but won't stop to enjoy the heat. Not even for a minute. Maybe I shouldn't be using a heating pad in the first place anyway, I don't know.

He probably crawls over it because he doesn't recognize it as heat in that short amount of time. Remember how igs can get burned by hot rocks....they don't "feel" the heat until it has circulated thru their bloodstream.
I personally have never used a heating pad because I think its best that Thrasher gets all her heat from above (like the sun). But it seems like a good plan when the ig is in your lap.....

It's been a while since I've used a heating pad. But in the past, I've used it to help keep her warm at nite, when she used to sleep on her basking area. Or if she was basking on a cool day in front of an open screen, I had used it. Well, since then she a) now sleeps with us under the covers and b) she has an above basking lamp which keeps her toasty on the cool sun-lit days. Btw, re: heat pads. There is a potential danger of cookage (heat pad + ig + a blanket == very HOT!) and shortage (check Consumer Reports or the goverment recall site for products that are bad!) I've known of 2 iguanas that have died from bad heat pads Des.

Hi Joseph-
We used a heating pad on Rex's day basking spot (on top of his empty cage), during the winter months. We covered it with a towel and it made a nice warm spot for him to stare out the window.
I'm aware of many who do the same on the back of the couch and on window ledges.
We ended up switching to a CHE which is located inside the empty cage and it seems to heat his area adequately.
Heed the warnings though, while they are IMO safer than reptile tape and UTH devices, you need to be careful with them.
Of course it does say to NOT sleep with them on, but we do it all the time! ;D

I have one on the back of my chair where Gil likes to bask... but I don't turn it on anymore. The light provdes plenty of heat for when he's out. BUT if it were a very cool winter day, I'd probably turn it on for a short time just to kick up the heat in that area.

We use heating pads where the igs sleep. They have a UVB light, and get outside plenty. But indoors their only heat source is the pads.

Here is an old photo of our setup. Pardon the sneeze on the window . Anyway, we use a CHE in the winter time too.

We have heating pads in all three of our iggys cages and they seem to love them.

I just have one under his water bowl to keep it nice and warm My ig wont sit still either, always scrabbling about, very rarely will he sit and be stroked Unless hes in a place where he wants to be then he will allow me to tickle him for ages!
