Well Bob has learned that when I am sitting on the floor leaning against my bed eating he normally gets a taste of what I have -- so far it has only been fruit that I ate so no problems there. Today I was eating a grilled cheese when I had a 4' ig hit my lap at a full run. This guy has learned to beg worse -- or is it better -- than my dad's puppies. At least with the puppies you can stand up and be out of reach. When I stood up Bob was still glued to my sleeve reaching and straining for the sandwich.
I ended up putting his food dish in my lap so I could eat my sandwich. Why can I vividly see him jumping into a bowl of soup that I am eating sometime in the future?

I like it.
I have a banana near by, and will try it if I can get Bob off of me. I am lounging on my bed with an ig on my chest and laptop next to me and I can only type with my right hand because of Bob.
I just showed Bob the other ig picsand all he did was taste the screen.

No jumping but Bob was never much of a jumper. As an iglet he fell and really hurt his back while trying to turn around on a branch.
He would reach as hard as he could for the banana then start to wave with a front foot.
I started to wave the treat back and forth and he started to wobble as he followed it with his head -- mouth open and tounge out.

Hi Mar-
I neglected to say:
When we first started and Rex would "wave", we put our hand under his front paw to give him a boost up. Once they get comfortable balancing on their tail, they are able to do it better and better.
While it looks like he is jumping in the pic, he's actually just slowly raising himself up off the floor. Then he grabs the bread and THUMP, giant lizard on solid ground again.
Notice the triangulation of legs and tail to create a base for him to raise his front legs up.

I have to try that. He knows what treats are and will readily run across the room for them.
I have not given him bread for a long time but am now making a lot of bread with my bread machine. What are your thoughts on giving him bread that uses honey as a baked in sweetener? I mainly make honey wheat oat bread but have been making white also of late.

Karla is not much for begging, tho sometimes she gets impatient waiting for her food and will bite the dish before I put it down. But once, I made homemade almond ice cream (basically just milk, eggs, almonds, and a whole lot of sugar) and was eating it on the bed and she FREAKED and flew from her little area to where I was! I actually screwed up on the ice cream making, and put the whites in when I should have put the yolk and vice-versa, so it smelled strongly of eggs and wasn't very tasty at all... but Karla had never eaten eggs before. What the hell? She couldn't get enough of it! Ok, it was a very sunny day and all, but you know--it's ice cream! Doesn't she know she's cold-blooded? ;-)
And of course, ice cream does not easily separate from one's hands, so while she was *trying* not to eat me along with the ice cream, I actually got nipped a couple times ;D.

My Zok will do just about anything for a peice of bread! Including the standing up for it but Kat yells at me for doing that and says I am being mean and to just give her the bread!!
Uh you do know that eggs are not really good to give iguanas don't you?

Yes, animal protein bad--got that down. But I also have a weakness for the idea of instinctual knowledge of your needs, whether human or iguana, and I figured that at some level, Karla knew what was good for her. That idea was, of course, tempered by the fact that this has never happened before or since. Hail alfalfa! Li.

Well I started trying to train Bob to stand today and this is going to take a while. I had him reaching up while standing one front foot on my finger -- I think that the orange he grabbed was about 11 inches off the ground.
On the other hand while I was peeling the orange -- standing in my room -- before I was even able to have a bite Bob had crossed the room and climbed all the way up my pantleg and was reaching for the orange.
This guy is a monster now. I don't know if I want to start him on bread -- how nuts will he go for that?

Hi Mark-
LOL, bread is like a tremendous treat for them for some reason. Of couse, you shouldn't give it often, but for kicks once in a while it's fun.
Takes them a while to trust the standing position. After all they are exposing their soft belly to danger. Give it time, he'll get it.
I know another person who is able to roll a grape across the floor and the Ig runs for it. I thought that was hysterical! Rex is too lazy to do that now.
Keep up the interaction, it is great for their taming and trust level.
Jlynn- Igs love to leap! Rex will leap from one branch to another rather than walk or climb. So, he's just being an Ig.
