anyone know what causes a lizard to puff their eyes up when closed like they are bugging out?? i have seen both Narcy and our bearded dragon Bump do this. . .they don't seem to be in pain or anything, just puffing up their eyes! in the photo i posted in the photo gallery ('a good night') Narcy had his eyes puffed. . .don't know if you can tell it or not in the pic though.

Hi Diane I have read about 3 possible reasons. 1) They are simply relaxing their eyeball muscles. 2) They are relaxing their eyeball muscles in order to help rid themselves of the very thin shed on the lids. 3) In cases where the eyes stay that way a majority of the time it can be a "symptom" of kidney disease......or liver....crap! I forget which. I'll have to do some reading and get back to ya on that part. I've seen Thrasher do it for both the first and second reasons.

FYI: I found out about this link from the Yahoo! group Pogona_Diseases that I'm on: home.comcast.net/%7Eholachapulin/Eyeproblems.htmlSomewhere, on IZ, I posted something about buggin' eyeballs; but I can't find it

When I first saw Don do this it scared the outa me!! We had just sprayed him and for a second I thought there must have been some sort of irratant in the spray, it looked so weird. I assumed it was to loosen the skin on his eyelids, it always seems to be when his heads shedding. Tricky bit the eyelids though, always feel sorry for the little critter when hes got one hanging off lol!

Audrey is shedding on her head right now and she does this every time I take her outside to sun her. She usually waits a little while until she is nice and warm, then she starts puffing her eyes. Every time she does this, she rolls her head back and forth, rubbing it on my legs while she sits in my lap. So, it looks like one of the reasons is definitely to help dislodge the old skin from her eyelids.
