All I can tell you is start bouncing around reading threads on this site. That will give you a good idea of what an iguana entails care wise.

Not knowing much about sand monitors...I couldn't tell you what is better...but I don't think I could do that if I did know. You know how much space you have and how much care you are willing to give one or the other.
Iga are arboreal...you will need more space going up than out. Sand monitors are terrestrial needing more floor space than going up. What do you have room for?

Neither one is going to be easy to care for, by ANY stretch of the imagination. One major difference between the two that might make up your mind...the Iguana is a vegetarian, thus neither his food, nor his poop will smell NEARLY as bad as that of a carnivore such as the Sand Monitor. Just something to consider.
