I've decided to start leash training my little Z since im starting to take him out more i like to let him walk around with out having to chase him to get him back. i found a barrel clip and some old shoe laces and started off in the bathroom, but how exactly do i do this, i started off letting him walk to the door and then gently pulling him closer which didnt seem to bother him to much . than i held him still with the leash so i could get close enough to pick him up. after he got bored with these i let him walk through the living room. It did make it easyier to handle him since he seemd to except that he cant get away if i dont give him some slack. how did you guys leash train yours? i want to eventually be able to bring him outside for some sun in the summer

Heh...neither of my kids are "leash trained". Audrey comes outside with me without a leash because she has a completely placid personality, even when I take her to work and she hears the noise of airplanes running and sees ramp vehicles buzzing by us. Sometimes she gets mad at me because I won't let her eat the weeds growing up through the tar-mac, but she is still easily controllable without a leash. Hercules, on the other hand, doesn't go outside...period...he's the typical adult male ig who wants to establish his own territory as soon as he leaves "my territory" (my apartment). Regardless of any leash, he becomes very violent and aggressive, often croc-rolling when I try to bring him inside. Birds freak Herky Monster out too, as they should any ig, but Audrey doesn't care about them...just calmly looks up to see what's up there. ;D

Zair isn't leash-trained either. The only reason he has one on at all is when I take him to groups for education or "show and tell", or just out for a day on the town he cannot launch and put it in 10 claw-drive. He's a pretty mild ig in those situations though, or I would never take him.
At home this is a different story. If I put him down he is heading for the trees and croc-rolls when he's held back by the leash....so at home, he is strictly and outdoor sun cage ig only!

Hi Jade! Igs don't really "leash train" as most people think of the term. The darn things just won't HEEL! The leash is more a safety feature that ensures the ig won't go zooming off to other pastures! If you basically follow where the ig wants to go it may look like you are walking the ig when in truth it is the ig taking YOU for a walk. ;D

i knowi didnt mean it like the way i walk my dog, not that she heels anyway . more like so he wont flip out when i put it on him but he seems to be ok with it so far. can the leash hurt him at all, like putting to much pressure on his stomache when he pulls or anything?

Thats the advantage of the hip lead over the neck leads. Even if the ig goes spastic (Igs Spastic NOOOO Never!) It really can't hurt them. There were times that Zok would wig out and really croc roll and has never had any injury. This isn't to say that you should hold them supported in the air by the lead! Gotta clarify things just in case!
