i have a 4 year old iguana, im not sure the gender i was leaning towards female, i heard some people say male im just not sure. i went into her cage to grab her food plate, it was empty i was going to put more food in there. she showed a lot of agressive signs making herself bigger, dewlap out, she looks extremely angry. i wasnt going to go near her so i went to back away and she went to whip me with her tail which she has never ever done to me before. then i just watched her i was in disbelief and then i saw her look up at the cage top and jumped right through it onto the floor. i went to pick her up because i was afraid she was hurt, and she did the same posture and wouldnt let me near her and started running around the room extremely fast. i didnt know what to do at all as i didnt want to get bitten. i apprached her slowly after a few minutes. she let me pet her and calmed down and even buldged her eyes. i went to pick her up and she got out of my arms and repeated the behavior. i finally was able to "chase" her back into her cage i closed the doors. and top was fixable. i left her in there with the lights off as i type this shes just looking at me. what was this about, and why did she get so agressive after 4 years of her being the sweetest iguana for so long. please any help would be great thank you guys so much!

You know, I've gone through this about 100 times with my ig Tiki..1st it was the design on my shirt, a hat, a bandana, the smell of a female ig from the shelter I volunteer at, gray clothing, the color blue...the color orange. He's ridiculous. It's taken quite a bit of time to get over only 50% of these things..Oh yeah, he also has to see both my hands, or he'll freak on that. I also noticed this behavior right before he went full fledged into breeding season, where he tried to "mate" with me for 5 months..Pay close attention to what you're wearing, clothing with designs, perfume, colors or smells "she" may not immediatley recognize. I see alot of this at the reptile humane society, it's quite a common thing! Good luck!

hey there i was reading about your ig being in an agressive state. and i had a question because my ig is going on a year and 5 months. she had been recently sick and had taken her to the vet. well she has gotten better and she still isnt eating on her own so i have to force feed her. shes better but for some reason shes more agressive now then what she has been before she had gotten sick. she whips and bites and i dont know what to do. i handle her bout 3 to 4 times a day but getting her out of the cage without her doing all the whipping and biting its hard. but when i do get her out and calm her down shes fine. what do i do. any suggestions?

What was the illness and what about it requires you to continue to forcefeed? That is a ver stressful thing to have to dotoan animal. I suspect that part of your agression problem is the iguana seeing you as a threat due to the manhandling required to forcefeed.
We probably ouight to spin this off into a new thread.

Welcome to the IZ pighunter...:-)
Let's find out what you have for care first. It could be something there that can contribute to the attitude.
I'm going to start this in a new thread of it's own though - so look for the questions there...:-D
