I gave Gil papaya for the first time today and he LOVES it! I've fed mangos before, but they weren't ripe so I decided to get a papaya. They're so big though. I just cut the whole thing into small pieces and will feed it over the next week (if it keeps well). Good thing it's a staple fruit.

I tried smashing it into hers and then she refused to eat ANY of it. Maybe I need to check my email and see if she created an ID of her own! ;D

Fluffy does the same thing with parsley, so I hide it under her turnip greens..which she LOVES!! So here she is thinking "wow, mom gave me alot of greens" and I'm sitting there thinking "when is she gonna catch on?!" lol. I know this will only last so long, because shes begining not to scarf her greens down as fast so I think shes begining to realise that I've been tricking her.

I didn't realize that parsley was so important. Tesa, is it a staple? I'll have to get Gil some.

No Steph....it's an occasional food. the C to Ph ratio is 2.4:1 which isn't bad but it's known to be high in oxalates. (calcium binders) I was just trying to vary her diet a bit. and after I sat for 30 minutes picking all the little tops off the stems......she refused to even look at it ;D

Some Papayas get crazy. Korger here has Imperial Papayas for sale right now, twice the size of a cantalope.
A fun thing with Papayas is starting the seeds. Rinse the seeds in a collender then spread on paper towels to dry over night. Plant them about 1/4" deep and they should sprout in two weeks. I had some about 18" tall growing out of a 10 gallon fish tank until Bob climbed in and snacked -- there were no ill effects but I don't advise leting that happen. My uncle did the same thing in, but he used is South Florida back yard, and now has a small grove of 10' tall papaya "trees" next to his bananas and bamboo.

With all of the fruit trees and vines he has growing fruit rats have become a problem.
Papays are not really trees as they don't branch off and the stem is very soft. He said that one good swing with a kitchen knife should go through 6 inches of stem. He and I started the seeds on the same day, mine germinated first but when mine were 18" tall a month later his were about 40". My handi cap was the fact it was mid march and I was in northern Michigan so snow was still falling and there was little sun.
