As we are finding out...some hoods are better than others as far as how much UVB emits from our tubes. We can extend the amount of UVB emitting by as much as double in some instances.
A herper "across the pond" who has been compiling spread sheets on the new Mega-Rays, among other things, has been taking readings with her NEW UVB meter and has been taking readings to another level.
In her testings she has found that aluminum foil used as a reflector has doubled the numbers on her readings. The light fixture she was using has no hood. They're just end caps that suction cup to the back of the tank in her beardies viv.
I have just put foil behind the cheapo Wal-Mart hood (we now know there are better) I use for my two 48" Reptisun 5.0's. At 6" dead-center I got a reading of 41 uW/cm2 before the foil having just a white inner hood for some reflection. Adding the foil has raised the readings to 60 uW/cm2.
**These tubes are now 1 1/2 years old.
So this means that whatever hood you choose to purchase...and I know everyone will purchase the best... ;D...use foil to boost the focus of UVB emmisions back down on your ig(s).
