I have a heat lamp. I still need to buy a UVB lamp. I'm going to buy the hood that holds the fluroscent bulb and two regular bulbs. This is a lot of money though so I need to wait until I get paid in a week. I can bring my iguana outside in the sun for a while every day. Will this be okay for a week?

Jenna, The more time under direct sunlight the better, just make sure he does not overheat. You should provide some shaded area as well. Even a couple of hours of real sunlight is more than some uninformed owners provide, unfortunately. In my opinion, he will be okay for a week. Of course, buy the light as soon as possible and you'll have a much happier Ig.

Eki was without Florescent lighting for about a month. He was being fed correctly and taken outside daily for half an hour or more. A year later he took a jump out of a bedroom window down about 6-7 feet. Because of the proper feeding and lighting he survived because he's healthy and well cared for. Just get the ligth asap. Impovise till then.

Sadly I recieved an email from someone in town I have been helping. She put her 2 year old ig...who still lived in a 10 gal. tank outside in the sun...still in the 10 gallon tank. The iguana died a short time later... Many people use the sun in place of UVB during the warmer months and save on their UVB bulbs until colder weather approaches. As little as 20 minutes a day is more than they can get in a day with the UVB tubes. It's a great bonding time if you sit out there with your ig... . As for the hood you're wanting to get...these only allow for one flourescent UVB tube when an iguana really needs two. If you get a shop hood...not the cheap brand from Wal-mart...but one of the $20 hoods from say Lowe's (the ballast on these actually increase the amount of UVB emissions)...you will not only save money, but be able to hold two of the tubes. Use clamp lamps to house the single heat bulb you will need...and this just needs to be a regular incandescent house bulb like you use for your house lamps. I get the impression you are using an aquarium. The minium size for a baby under a year should be no less than a 55 gal. There's no way to get the proper heat gradients needed in anything smaller...proven data... After a year you need to look into custom building something much bigger....mwahahaha...let the building begin. Seriously though, there are some very good ideas in the housing section. Cheap UVB bulbs: www.reptiledirect.comGood Brands: Reptisun 5.0 Iguana Light 5.0 Exoterra 8.0 Arcadia 5.0 Then there is the Mega Ray EB (external ballast) from www.reptileuv.com. This is a screw in merc vapor which supplies the best source of UVB on the market.

Yeah. The tank he is in now is just a temporary home because I wasn't expecting an iguana and it was the only thing I had around my house. I just put an idea I have for the new cage in the enclosure section. Hope it's good.
